Vendetta is a Damage hero—often called a DPS—not a Tank. Blizzard identifies her as Hero 45 and describes her as the first melee DPS hero in Overwatch history. The “reportedly confirmed” wording came earlier: a November 2025 PC Gamer report said a press email had already called her an Italian Damage Hero before the public reveal clarified her role.
What is Vendetta’s role in Overwatch 2?
Blizzard’s retrospective identifies Vendetta as Hero 45 and “our newest damage dealer.” In its December 2, 2025 Season 20 announcement, Blizzard called her “the first melee DPS Hero in Overwatch history.” Those are historical role descriptions; they do not establish her current competitive strength or ability values.

Before Blizzard’s public announcement, PC Gamer reported on November 18, 2025 that a press email sent to the outlet and others described Vendetta as an Italian Damage Hero. The article noted that the public trailer description and social posts had not yet clarified the role. PC Gamer writer Tyler Colp described the uncertainty this way: “Nobody thinks the lady with the big deadly sword is a healer, but they also can’t figure out if she’s going to be a tank or a damage-dealer.” That was his characterization of the reveal’s ambiguity, not a measured survey of players.
Why did Blizzard make Vendetta a melee Damage hero?
Blizzard says the team explored three distinct concepts: a long-range hitscan hero, a midrange assassin, and a close-range melee DPS. The melee version proved the most compelling to the developers and made the oversized-sword concept possible. Blizzard describes her combat identity as mobile and aggressive, focused on closing distance and dealing melee damage. The retrospective also characterizes her as having a high skill floor and requiring accurate aim; those are developer descriptions, not independent performance findings.

In a November 20, 2025 PC Gamer interview, senior character artist Bryan Bedford said he had seen confident expectations that Hero 45 would be a Tank because of a recent release pattern, which the team was changing. He added, “one of the most important aspects of adding a new hero is honestly just coming up with something that’s fun to play.” Associate game director Alec Dawson described the choice as “more about servicing that playstyle that we really didn’t have in the roster.” These remarks explain the design rationale the developers gave; they do not show that the roster is currently balanced or that players broadly agree.
Who is Vendetta, and what is her sword called?
Blizzard’s character history says Vendetta is the only child of former Talon figure Antonio Bartalotti, who was killed by Gabriel Reyes. She seeks to reclaim her birthright. Her epithet, “La Lupa,” refers to the Roman legend of the she-wolf, and her sword is named the Palatine Fang.

Senior narrative designer Jude Stacey described the team’s villain direction for Vendetta this way: “It’s been a while since we’ve had a true villain,” followed by, “There was no waffling or trying to convince people she’s evil. It just flowed.”

The role and design-history details are established by Blizzard’s retrospective and 2025 season announcement. They answer whether Vendetta is a Tank or a DPS, but they are not a current competitive guide. The cited material does not establish her October 2026 win rate, pick rate, tier, current ability values, season availability, or purchase terms. A historical description of her intended playstyle should not be treated as evidence of present-day balance or performance.
