If No Man’s Sky has no sound, crackles, or cuts out, first identify your platform and symptom: Windows and PS5 have different audio controls, and the right fix depends on whether the game is silent, distorted, or routed to the wrong device. On Windows, start with the selected output and volume; on PS5, check the audio output device. Change one setting at a time and test again.
Start by identifying the sound problem
Check whether the issue affects all game audio or only voice chat, and whether other games or system sounds work through the same speakers or headphones. Note your platform and audio connection too. This helps distinguish a game-volume or routing problem from a system-level one; the Windows and PS5 steps below should not be applied to other platforms.
- No Man’s Sky no sound: Check mute, volume, and the selected output device.
- No Man’s Sky audio crackling or distorted: On Windows, test audio enhancements and the available output format before moving on to drivers or audio services.
- No Man’s Sky sound cutting out: First determine whether the issue is limited to the game or also affects other apps and system audio.
Fix No Man’s Sky no sound on Windows
Windows may send a game’s audio to a different device than the one you are listening to, or the game, system, or output device may be muted. Microsoft lists incorrect output selection, mute, audio enhancements, and driver problems among possible causes of sound issues; these checks are general Windows troubleshooting, not a confirmed game-specific diagnosis. See Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guide.
- Check that No Man’s Sky is not muted in the game and that Windows volume is up.
- Open Settings > System > Sound. Under output, select the speakers or headphones you intend to use, then check the volume.
- Open More sound settings > Playback and set the intended device as the default playback device.
- If the game is still silent, turn audio enhancements off for that output and test again. Run the Windows audio troubleshooter if it is available.
Fix crackling or distorted audio on Windows
Microsoft notes that audio enhancements can cause distortion or crackling on some devices. Try the following in order, testing the game after each change so you can tell what helped. Microsoft’s recommendations are general Windows guidance; they do not identify a particular format or setting as a universal No Man’s Sky fix. See Microsoft’s guide to audio problems in Windows.

Check sound output on PS5
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm that the selected output device is the one you are using.
- Alternatively, open Control Center > Sound to change the output device.
- Check the headphone or controller-speaker volume if you are using either. Available options can vary with the connected devices and audio configuration.
Sony documents these controls in its PS5 audio output settings guide. Hello Games’ Next Generation Update notes state: “Added support for Tempest 3D AudioTech on PlayStation 5.” That is platform context, not evidence that 3D audio causes a sound problem or that changing it is a general repair.

The available official guidance does not establish a single No Man’s Sky-specific sound fix that applies to every platform and symptom. Do not assume Windows or PS5 menu steps match Xbox or another setup. Before pursuing a more specific diagnosis, note your platform, output device, whether the problem is silence, distortion, or cutouts, and whether other games or system audio work through that device.
