“Launching today” referred to March 26, 2025: Hello Games announced and released No Man’s Sky update 5.6, Relics, on that date. The update was free for existing players on PC, console and VR. It introduced fossil hunting as a new way to explore planets, collect ancient alien bones and build skeleton displays.
What is the No Man’s Sky Relics update?
Relics is No Man’s Sky update 5.6, released March 26, 2025. Its central addition is a paleontology-inspired gameplay loop: players search for planetary fossil beds and dig sites, excavate ancient alien bones, then use the finds to create displays. Hello Games described hundreds of unique fossilized parts to unearth.
In its launch announcement, Hello Games said the update would bring “the sense of a before-time” to the universe and that players would have fun “digging into the new-found palaeontology.”
What can you do with fossils in No Man’s Sky?
Excavate and collect bones
Fossils are found at ancient dig sites on planets. Some sites are defended by stone guardians, adding a hazard to the hunt. The update also features rare skeletal creatures and titanic boneworms.

Build and display skeletons
Collected parts can be placed as base decorations or assembled into complete skeletons on display plinths. Finished exhibits can be packaged for redeployment, traded with other players or sold. Fossil collectors also offer exchanges, so players can swap surplus bones for parts they are looking for.
Use bones in cooking and find sites more easily
Relics adds bone-based cooking recipes. It also lets players mark planets from the Discoveries screen, making it easier to return to worlds with features such as ancient bones.

What else came with Relics?
Update 5.6 also launched Expedition Eighteen: Relics, a community expedition focused on recreating ancient lifeforms and uncovering secrets. Hello Games’ launch-era page described it as running for approximately six weeks and listed rewards including posters, decals, titles, a Living Stone suit customization set, the Basilisk Crown staff, a skeletal companion and the Living Stone jetpack. That launch information does not establish whether the expedition is playable now.
The 5.6 patch notes also included quality-of-life, save-system and optimization changes alongside the new fossil features.

Was the Relics update free?
Yes. Hello Games said Relics was free for existing No Man’s Sky players on PC, console and VR. The announcement presented Relics as an update to the game, not paid downloadable content.
