No More Heroes 3 Review: Stylish Combat, Uneven Open World

No More Heroes 3 delivers distinctive humor and stylish fights, but uneven exploration and platform-specific technical roughness shape its appeal.

No More Heroes 3 is worth a look if you want flamboyant boss fights, offbeat humor and action with a distinctly Suda51 flavor. Its combat and personality are the strongest parts; the open-world stretches and some technical roughness—especially in Switch reviews—make it an uneven fit for players seeking a consistently polished action game.

No More Heroes 3 review: what kind of game is it?

Developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, No More Heroes 3 follows Travis Touchdown as he climbs the Galactic Superhero Rankings to stop Prince FU and nine alien underlings from taking over Earth. The official site calls its genre “Assassin-Action”; Steam categorizes it as action and hack-and-slash, among other tags. Goichi Suda directed the game, and Nobuaki Kaneko is its main composer. The premise sets the tone: this is a deliberately strange action game, mixing ranking battles, crude jokes, colorful violence and a story that veers between parody and melodrama. A Nintendo Force Magazine excerpt listed by Metacritic described it as “a violent action game, an open-world do-gooder sim, a dorky dad story and a tribute/parody of ‘popcorn classic blockbusters’ all in one.” Metacritic’s Switch critic reviews

What do reviews say about the combat, story and open world?

Combat and direction are the main draw

Switch reviews frequently praise the game’s energy, direction, personality and boss battles. Press Start’s October 7, 2021 review excerpt called it “the best No More Heroes experience this far,” while also noting technical issues in open-world areas. These are critical judgments, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy the game’s particular brand of humor or pacing. Metacritic’s Switch critic reviews

No More Heroes 3
  • Earn money to enter ranked battles! To enter into each subsequent ranked battle, you’ll need to pay a pretty steep fee. Travis must take on various missions around town to make the money he needs to fight
  • Use your skills to dominate opponents! Enjoy even more hardcore slash-‘em-up action than ever before as you use the Joy-Con’s intuitive controls to wield Travis Touchdown’s trusty Beam Katana along with a slew of pro wrestling techniques!
  • Also, featured for the first time in the series, Travis can now use his Death Glove to activate a variety of skills, allowing for more strategic battles

Exploration is less consistent than the fights

The open areas and activities between major encounters are a recurring reservation in the review record. Some critics also found aspects of the story underdeveloped or the characters insufficiently explored. That contrast is central to the game’s reception: the combat and set pieces can be memorable, but the stretches connecting them are less consistently compelling. Metacritic’s Switch critic reviews

Is No More Heroes 3 worth playing?

It is a stronger recommendation for players who enjoy Goichi Suda’s surreal humor, Grasshopper Manufacture’s eccentric style, and boss-focused action than for someone looking for a conventional, polished open-world game. The cited reviews support a bold-but-uneven verdict: its combat and character are the attraction, while traversal, side activities and technical rough edges are the main trade-offs. This is an assessment of recurring review themes, not a claim that all critics or players agree. Switch reviews · PS5 reviews

If you already own the Switch version, the PS5 port’s reported performance improvements may matter more than new features, because reviewers do not report added content. If you are choosing a first version, weigh those review observations alongside the platform you already use. The evidence does not establish a universal ranking for PC or Xbox hardware, so check the exact platform listing and configuration rather than assuming the PS5 comparison applies to them.
