Nintendo lists a 7-inch OLED display, 64 GB of internal storage and a dock with wired LAN. But it is a refinement of the original Switch, not a newer performance generation. In 2026, whether it is the right buy depends on the games you want, your preference for OLED versus Switch 2’s larger LCD, and the prices available where you live.
What the Switch OLED does well
A larger OLED screen for handheld play
Nintendo describes the Switch OLED Model’s display as a 7-inch OLED screen, with vivid colors and sharp contrast. Those are Nintendo’s descriptions rather than independent measurements, but OLED is the model’s clearest distinction from the standard Switch. If you often play away from a television and value OLED’s display characteristics, that is the strongest reason to choose it.

The console’s appeal is a more pleasing handheld experience, not a documented jump to a new performance generation. Nintendo’s published OLED specifications focus on the screen, storage and dock; they do not establish a new performance tier.
A dock with wired LAN
The included OLED dock has a wired LAN port, useful if you prefer a wired network connection for docked play. Do not assume that every Switch dock has this port: Nintendo’s compatibility guidance distinguishes the OLED dock from earlier Switch docks.

#1 Best Overall
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
Storage and battery life
64 GB built in, with optional microSDXC expansion
Nintendo lists 64 GB of internal storage for the OLED Model. Its Switch FAQ says storage can be expanded with a microSDXC card up to 2 TB; cards are sold separately. Expansion is optional, but may be useful if you plan to keep a large library of downloaded games installed. Switch 2 uses microSD Express for expansion, a different card standard, so check the system’s requirements before buying a card.
Battery estimates depend on the game and conditions
Nintendo gives approximately 5.5 hours of battery life for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as an example for the Switch. This is a title-specific estimate, not a promise of the same runtime in every game or situation; actual battery life varies with software and conditions.

Nintendo says the OLED Model’s battery can be replaced for a fee through Nintendo Customer Support if replacement is needed. The fee and service availability depend on region; check with Nintendo support where you live.
Switch OLED vs Switch 2
These systems suit different priorities. Nintendo lists Switch 2 with a larger 7.9-inch, 1920 × 1080 LCD screen, HDR10 and variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz. The OLED Model uses OLED; Switch 2 uses LCD. Specs alone do not settle which screen you will prefer, so consider whether OLED’s display characteristics or Switch 2’s higher listed resolution and HDR/VRR support matter more to you.

Nintendo announced Switch 2 for release on June 5, 2025. The important buying question now is which system’s games and features you want, not simply which console is newer. Check Nintendo’s generation-to-generation console and accessory compatibility reference for the particular accessory you plan to use; compatibility should not be assumed for every item.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy the Switch OLED?
- Choose the OLED Model if you spend much of your time playing handheld, specifically want an OLED display, and its local price makes sense compared with Switch 2.
- Consider Switch 2 instead if you want its games or features, or prefer its larger, higher-resolution LCD with HDR10 and VRR support. Compare local prices and availability before deciding.
- Check accessory and storage needs if you already own Switch gear or expect to expand storage. Verify each accessory against Nintendo’s compatibility reference, and note that the two systems use different expansion-card standards.
Nintendo’s specifications establish what each system offers, but they do not establish which one is better value in your market. Prices and stock vary by region and retailer, so compare current local listings before buying.
