Nintendo’s “new Virtual Boy” is a viewer accessory for compatible Nintendo Switch consoles, not a standalone console. To play the Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics library, you need both a compatible accessory and a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The library launched Feb. 17, 2026, and Nintendo’s U.S. announcement says it is available only in the United States and Canada.
What is Nintendo’s Virtual Boy for Switch?
It is an add-on viewer used with a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 and Nintendo’s Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics software. Nintendo offers two versions: a replica-style accessory modeled on the original Virtual Boy and a less expensive cardboard model. Neither is a new, self-contained Virtual Boy console, and neither includes access to the game library on its own.
Nintendo announced the library for Feb. 17, 2026, on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The U.S. announcement limits library availability to the United States and Canada. Nintendo’s announcement has the launch and regional details.
What do you need to play?
- A compatible console: Nintendo Support lists Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch OLED as compatible. Switch Lite is not compatible.
- An eligible viewer: Nintendo says an official Virtual Boy accessory is required to play the library.
- Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack: This membership tier is required to access Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics. A paid Nintendo Switch Online membership without Expansion Pack is not enough to play the library.
The membership rules for buying hardware and playing games are different: Nintendo Support says a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is needed to purchase the accessories in the U.S. and Canada, while Expansion Pack is required for library access. See Nintendo Support’s Virtual Boy Accessories Overview & FAQ for its eligibility and compatibility details.
