Lending temporarily removes the game from the owner’s access. Nintendo’s official guidance describes how the feature works now, but does not establish exactly which earlier sharing arrangement changed or when.
How Nintendo’s digital game sharing works
Nintendo treats eShop games and downloadable content (DLC) as Virtual Game Cards. The owner can load and move those cards between up to two consoles paired with the same Nintendo Account. Once a card is loaded, its game can be played offline, and other users on that console can play it too. See Nintendo Support’s Virtual Game Card Guide and Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 announcement.
Using a card on the owner’s paired consoles
Open Virtual Game Cards from the HOME Menu. Pairing two consoles requires local communication the first time. When swapping a card between paired consoles, Nintendo says both systems must be powered on or in sleep mode and connected to the internet. After a card has been loaded, the game can be played without an internet connection.
Who can borrow a digital game, and for how long?
The owner can lend a Virtual Game Card to a member of the owner’s Nintendo Account family group. The owner and borrower need to bring their consoles near each other to begin the lending process, and both consoles must be connected to the internet. The borrower can play the game—and DLC lent with it—for up to 14 days. The card returns automatically when the loan period ends; either person can end the loan earlier by returning or retrieving the card.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The owner cannot play the lent game while the loan is active. Nintendo Support’s guidance puts it plainly: “Keep in mind that you will not be able to play games that you lend out to other people, and you don’t necessarily need to lend out games to share them.”
Limits on simultaneous loans
- An owner can lend up to three Virtual Game Cards at a time.
- A borrower can borrow only one card at a time.
- Only one card may be lent to a particular console.
- A console with users from multiple Nintendo Account family groups cannot borrow a card.
These operating limits are detailed in Nintendo Support’s guide. Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 announcement also describes lending one digital game per account for a maximum of 14 days and says it can be lent to up to three people simultaneously; the support guide provides the more detailed current restrictions.

Which consoles support Virtual Game Cards?
Nintendo lists Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, and Nintendo Switch 2 as supported systems. Some games are not eligible for lending, so support for a console does not mean every title can be loaned. Check Nintendo’s UK Nintendo Switch 2 product information and Virtual Game Card guide for the applicable details. Regional account wording and availability may vary.
Virtual Game Card lending vs. GameShare
| Feature | Who can play | Owner’s access | Duration and setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Load a Virtual Game Card | The owner and other users of the console where the card is loaded | Available on the console holding the loaded card | Move between up to two paired consoles; pairing and swapping have the connection requirements described above |
| Lend a Virtual Game Card | An eligible Nintendo Account family-group member | Unavailable to the owner while the loan is active | Up to 14 days; consoles must be near each other and online to start |
| GameShare | Players invited by a Switch 2 owner with a compatible game | Not a Virtual Game Card loan; it enables temporary play together | Temporary shared play; Nintendo lists additional restrictions for GameShare through GameChat |
GameShare is a separate feature, not a way to extend a Virtual Game Card loan or give an invitee lasting access to the game. Nintendo says only Switch 2 owners can initiate GameShare invitations. Its April 2, 2025 announcement describes GameShare alongside, but separately from, Virtual Game Cards.

What is—and is not—established about “new limits”
Nintendo’s current official materials explain Virtual Game Card use and lending rules. They do not, by themselves, identify a specific former sharing arrangement that was removed, establish when such a change occurred, or explain Nintendo’s reason for it. It is therefore more precise to describe the rules readers must follow now than to claim that Nintendo changed every previous way of sharing digital games.

Choosing the right way to share
- Want other people in your home to play? Load the Virtual Game Card on one of the owner’s paired consoles; other users on that console can play it, including offline after loading.
- Want a family-group member to use the game on another console? Lend it, knowing the owner gives up access during the loan and the card returns within 14 days.
- Want to play together temporarily? Check whether the game and systems support GameShare; it is not a loan that leaves the invitee with the game.
- Want to lend a copy without transferring digital access? Physical game cards are a separate option, subject to the game’s own requirements.
