Nintendo raised the U.S. Switch 2 system MSRP from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. The change is part of a wider set of regional price revisions, while new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 may now have different MSRPs from physical editions. Existing Switch owners may be able to reuse compatible games and some controllers, but not every accessory or storage card carries over.
How much does Nintendo Switch 2 cost now?
As of October 8, 2026, Nintendo of America lists the U.S. Switch 2 system at $499.99 MSRP, up from $449.99. The revised price took effect September 1, 2026, and excludes sales tax. Nintendo’s notice says the increase responds to “various changes in market conditions” expected to continue over the medium to long term; it does not identify a specific cost as the cause. The launch bundle is a different comparison: released June 5, 2025, it cost $499.99 and included the system plus a download code for Mario Kart World. That launch bundle price should not be read as the former price of the system by itself. Nintendo’s 2025 launch announcement

Nintendo said revisions for Switch 2 and Switch would also be implemented in other regions, with local details and timing to be announced by overseas subsidiaries. These three figures are not a worldwide price list: the Japanese figure is for a Japan-only Japanese-language model, the U.S. figure is MSRP before tax, and the European figure is a My Nintendo Store price including tax. Why did Nintendo raise the Switch 2 price?
Nintendo’s September 2026 U.S. notice gives a broad explanation—changes in market conditions expected to extend over the medium to long term—but no itemized account of the $50 increase. The notice does not establish that tariffs, memory, exchange rates, or any one supplier cost caused this specific revision.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described the company’s general pricing framework in the FY2025 results briefing Q&A. For hardware, Nintendo considers manufacturing costs, consumers’ perception of the price, exchange-rate differences compared with the original Switch launch, and conditions in each region. He also said software pricing takes account of factors such as larger game files and longer development periods. This is a general policy explanation from 2025, not a breakdown of the 2026 Switch 2 increase. Nintendo FY2025 results briefing Q&A
In that same briefing, Nintendo said tariffs, if imposed in a country or region, are treated as part of cost and incorporated into pricing. That policy statement does not show that tariffs alone—or at all—account for the 2026 U.S. revision.

Are Switch 2 digital games cheaper than physical copies?
Sometimes the MSRPs differ, but Nintendo has not set out a universal digital discount or a fixed price gap. Nintendo Support says that beginning in May 2026, starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 have an MSRP different from their physical versions. Nintendo says both formats provide the same game experience and attributes the difference to production and distribution costs, while describing the policy as additional purchasing choice. For context, Nintendo of America’s April 18, 2025 launch-period price list gave Mario Kart World an MSRP of $79.99 and Donkey Kong Bananza an MSRP of $69.99, with each listed price applying to both physical and digital versions at that time. Those examples are historical launch prices, not a current price list or a guide to the later format-specific policy. Nintendo’s April 2025 game price list
Can I use my old Switch games and accessories on Switch 2?
Backward compatibility can lower the cost of moving to Switch 2 if the games you already own are supported. Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Some Switch games also have free updates or paid upgrades for Switch 2, so check the status of specific games before counting on the full library carrying over. What carries over—and what does not
- Switch games: Compatible physical and digital games can be played, subject to title-specific support and compatibility.
- Original Joy-Con and Switch Pro Controllers: They can connect wirelessly. Original Joy-Con cannot attach to Switch 2, and they need a Switch console or compatible charging accessory to charge.
- Original Switch dock: It is not compatible with Switch 2.
- Storage cards: Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards for expanded storage. Conventional microSD cards can be used only to view screenshots or videos captured on Switch; they cannot serve as Switch 2 expanded storage.

Start with the system-only price in your country, then add only what your setup actually needs. A compatible game library and wireless controllers may reduce replacement spending, while a new dock, charging solution, or microSD Express card may be necessary depending on what you own and how you use the console. Game upgrades can also be free or paid, and physical and digital MSRPs are not always the same for new Nintendo-published Switch 2 exclusives.
Quick Recap
- Compare system-only pricing with system-only pricing; do not treat the 2025 Mario Kart World bundle as the old bare-system price.
- Check whether each must-have Switch game is compatible and whether it needs a free update or paid upgrade.
- Confirm whether controllers can meet your needs wirelessly and how you will charge original Joy-Con.
- Budget for microSD Express storage if you want expanded storage; an existing conventional microSD card does not provide it.
- Use current local retailer prices for a purchase decision, since announced MSRP and launch-period accessory prices do not guarantee current retail price or availability.
