Nobody Wants to Die is a single-player sci-fi noir detective adventure set in an alternate 2329 New York, where the wealthy can preserve or transfer their consciousness. Its premise and crime-scene reconstruction tools give it a clear narrative hook; whether the investigation feels substantial enough is the key question for players who want more than a story-led experience. The available official information establishes the setup and platforms, but not how satisfying the writing, pacing, puzzles, or ending are in play.
What is Nobody Wants to Die?
Developed by Critical Hit Games and published on Steam by PLAION and Deep Silver, Nobody Wants to Die released on July 17, 2024. It is a single-player adventure, not a multiplayer game. The story follows detective James Karra and police liaison Sara Kai as they pursue a serial killer targeting New York’s elite.
The setting’s central idea is that people can preserve or transfer consciousness—if they can afford it. That makes the murder investigation more than a conventional hunt for a killer: the premise ties technology, wealth, and the value of a person’s continued life together. The game is built in Unreal Engine 5, according to the developer and official listings.
How does Nobody Wants to Die play?
The advertised investigative hook is the use of time manipulation and advanced technology to reconstruct events at crime scenes. These are the tools the game foregrounds, alongside its detective story. The official descriptions do not establish how much freedom players have when investigating, how challenging the puzzles are, or how much their choices alter events. Those are important distinctions: players looking for a tightly directed narrative may welcome a story-first approach, while fans of systemic detective games may want to know how much inference and experimentation the cases demand.

For a purchase decision, look for a review grounded in actual cases and interactions: how evidence is found and interpreted, how often reconstruction is used, and whether exploration and dialogue feel like meaningful parts of solving the crimes or connective tissue between story scenes. The premise alone cannot answer whether the investigation is mechanically deep.
Does the noir setting stand out?
The intended visual language combines 1930s-inspired noir with a futuristic New York. In an Xbox Wire article published July 22, 2024, Critical Hit Games co-founder and game producer Artur Jaskólski described the goal as combining “the 1930s stylings with futuristic visions of New York” to convey the game’s mystery and intrigue. That is the developer’s stated artistic intent, not an independent assessment of how consistently the finished scenes achieve it.

The combination gives the game a recognizable identity: its world can draw on familiar noir conventions while using consciousness technology to make the future feel socially distinct. Whether that atmosphere carries the experience will depend on the scenes themselves, rather than the setting description alone.

Is Nobody Wants to Die worth playing?
The strongest reason to consider it is the specific combination of a serial-killer investigation, a future shaped by purchasable immortality, and time-assisted crime-scene reconstruction. It is a more natural fit for players drawn to narrative adventures and noir settings than for anyone expecting the official premise alone to guarantee a complex, open-ended detective simulation.
