Noctuary is a story-led single-player adventure with visual-novel-style storytelling and action sections—not simply a visual novel or a conventional action RPG. Steam’s tags include Visual Novel, JRPG, and Bullet Hell, but they do not establish how much time the game devotes to reading versus combat. This review covers the Steam PC game developed by Gratesca; it is not about the unrelated book, apps, or other works that share the name.
What is Noctuary?
Noctuary is an Adventure, Casual, Indie, and RPG game developed by Gratesca and published by Gratesca and Serenity Forge. It released on Steam on November 28, 2023. Its story follows two young “illuminators,” Fancia and Alina, as they travel across Inlixaland in pursuit of becoming “The Arborangers.”
Steam lists it as single-player. Its popular user-defined tags include Visual Novel, Story Rich, JRPG, Multiple Endings, and Bullet Hell. Those tags suggest the range of elements players may encounter, but they are community labels rather than a precise breakdown of the game’s structure or time spent in each mode. Is Noctuary closer to a visual novel or gameplay?
The most accurate expectation is a story-forward adventure/RPG that combines visual-novel-style narrative with action sections. The available evidence does not establish a tested reading-to-combat ratio, so it would be misleading to promise that either side dominates by a particular amount. Players choosing between the two should think of Noctuary as a blend rather than a pure visual novel or a combat-first action RPG.

Steam user reviews include individual praise for the story, characters, voice acting, and endings, as well as comments about how narrative and gameplay fit together. Those reactions are useful as examples of what some players notice, not a representative survey or a professional-review consensus.

Steam’s page also notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later as of January 1, 2024. That client-support note is separate from the game’s listed minimum requirements.
What does the Lite Version do for Steam Deck and lower-performance PCs?
In a September 2, 2025 announcement, Gratesca Studio introduced a free “Lite Version” DLC and recommended it for Steam Deck players. The developer says it reduces runtime memory use and compresses some art assets to lower GPU load, power use, and overheating, while increasing disk-space use. The compressed assets may look slightly worse. The studio presents the option as a way to address stuttering and crashes on lower-performance devices; those are developer-stated aims, not independently verified results or a performance guarantee. The same announcement gives an example target configuration for the Lite version: Intel Core i3-2100, 8 GB RAM, 11 GB disk space, and NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030. This is distinct from the base Steam listing’s 9 GB storage and GTX 480 or RX 550 graphics minimums; do not treat the two configurations as interchangeable.
