If Outpath started crashing after you enabled its controller-support beta, switch back to the default stable branch first. The developer said problems followed a controller update and reverted the main build to the last stable version. That is a relevant workaround for players on that beta—not a universal fix for every Steam Deck crash.
Check whether Outpath is on the controller-support beta
Outpath’s developer first introduced controller support and Steam Deck optimization through an opencontroller beta branch, with a plan to move it to the default branch after stability was confirmed. Later, the developer reported unexpected problems following a controller-support update and said the main game build would return to the last stable pre-update version, while the controller-support version would remain available as a beta. The announcement is titled “Controller Support Issues and recent bugs” and displays May 31 without a year, so the date alone does not establish which build a particular installation currently uses.
- In Steam, open Library, select Outpath, then open Properties.
- Choose Betas (called Game Versions & Betas on some platforms).
- If the controller-support beta is selected and the crashes began after opting into it, choose the default or stable option to return to the main branch. Restart the game and check whether the crash still occurs.
The developer described restoring the stable build to let players continue without the reported problems, but did not say that changing branches fixes all crash causes. Read the developer’s branch announcement.
If the stable branch still crashes, isolate other causes
Make one change at a time and test the game after each one. Valve’s Steam Deck guidance covers general system instability; it does not identify these steps as Outpath-specific fixes.

Install SteamOS updates and restart
Install any available SteamOS updates, then restart the Deck before testing Outpath again. Valve recommends updating and restarting when troubleshooting system instability.
Temporarily close third-party Desktop Mode applications
Exit or disable third-party applications running in Desktop Mode, restart the Deck, and test again. Valve lists third-party apps as a possible source of instability for applications running through Steam.

Try the latest Proton compatibility tool
- Open Outpath’s Properties in the Steam Library.
- Go to Compatibility and enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton option available, then launch the game and test it.
If you had only the Linux version installed, Steam may download the Windows version when you force Proton. This is general Steam Deck guidance, not a verified Outpath fix.
Reduce graphics load
If the crash continues, lower the graphics preset or adjust individual settings to reduce system load, then test again. Valve recommends this as a general troubleshooting step.

What Outpath’s later update does—and does not—confirm
A later Outpath announcement, “Outpath v1.1.0 – Multiplayer, Controller Support & Save Fixes,” describes controller and Steam Deck support as experimental and mentions larger text and 16:10 resolutions. It also says, “A crash while saving no longer erases your save.” That statement concerns preserving save data when a saving crash occurs; it does not establish that all Steam Deck crashes were fixed. The announcement displays October 4 without a year.

If Outpath still crashes on the stable branch after you have tested the general Deck steps, use the game’s technical-issue support route on Steam or report a reproducible problem through the developer’s official channels. Include the branch selected, whether the crash began after a change, what you were doing when it happened, and which troubleshooting steps you tried. The Steam support page identifies David Moralejo Sánchez as developer and GrabTheGames and UpgradePoint as publishers. It lists [email protected] under “Official Support,” but labels it as a press contact; it should not be treated as a guaranteed technical helpdesk.
