Overwatch 2 is now presented simply as Overwatch, alongside a broader 2026 plan built around a connected, year-long story—not as a separately sold sequel. The Reign of Talon arc was designed to unfold across seasons and other story media, with new heroes and ongoing game updates tied to the conflict.
What changed when Overwatch 2 became Overwatch?
The name change came with a shift in how Blizzard framed the live game’s continuing story and content. Rather than treating each update as an isolated chapter, the 2026 direction tied seasons to one larger narrative, the Reign of Talon. The available account establishes that framing, but does not provide enough detail to state Blizzard’s exact rationale for dropping the “2.”
This was an update to the identity and ongoing direction of the game, not an announcement of a separately sold sequel. Xbox describes Overwatch as a free-to-play team-based hero shooter, with 5v5 or 6v6 play and more than 40 heroes in its 2026 game listing: Xbox’s Overwatch listing.
What is the Reign of Talon?
The Reign of Talon is the year-long story arc at the center of the 2026 plan. In a February 4, 2026 interview with Xbox Wire, Overwatch narrative lead Miranda Moyer said, “For the first time in Overwatch’s history, we’re telling a complete story.” She described an arc with a beginning, middle, and end, with events developing through multiple seasons and media, including hero trailers and motion comics.

The intent is for the conflict to advance through connected chapters and visible developments, rather than leaving story threads untouched between game updates. That makes the narrative a continuing part of the seasonal plan, not just background material for a single launch. Read the Xbox Wire interview with Miranda Moyer.
How many heroes were planned, and when?
Moyer told Xbox Wire that Blizzard planned ten new heroes for the 2026 story year, with five planned for Season 1, which began February 10, 2026. The interview linked the characters to the evolving conflict and the stories of established heroes.

- 10 Bonus Loot Boxes with cosmetic goodies for your Overwatch heroes;Battery: no battery used
Those numbers describe the announced plan, not confirmation that every planned hero was ultimately released. Xbox’s listing describes the game as having more than 40 heroes and more than 25 maps; those are listing figures, not measures of what the overhaul added.
What does the overhaul mean for players?
- One continuing storyline: Seasonal events are part of the Reign of Talon arc, with narrative material also appearing outside matches.
- New characters tied to the plot: The announced ten-hero plan connected new arrivals to the larger conflict, rather than presenting the additions as unrelated roster changes.
- The game remains an evolving free-to-play shooter: The change in name did not make this a separately sold sequel, according to the available game description.
Where had the story reached by late 2026?
Xbox’s current game listing describes Season 5 as the Reign of Talon finale, featuring a new support hero, story developments, a new Escort map, and character updates. Blizzard’s search-indexed official patch notes show retail updates through September 17, 2026. These are time-sensitive snapshots of the live game and can change with later updates; they establish the planned arc’s progression, not whether every part of the year-long plan was delivered exactly as announced.
