Nintendo later revealed Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, and released it on June 5, 2025. Some details circulating before the reveal proved accurate, but that does not establish that every image in this particular set was genuine.
What did the leaked Switch 2 images reportedly show?
Nintendo Wire reported on December 26, 2024, that NextHandheld had shared several images on Christmas Day. The outlet described the images as showing an alleged side view of the console, a close-up of the Switch 2 logo on the dock, and the dock itself. These are descriptions of what the images appeared to depict, not verified specifications.

- Console: The reported side view appeared to show the Joy-Con connector area, magnetic attachment system, kickstand and Nintendo logo.
- Dock logo: A close-up appeared to show a Switch 2 logo on the front of the dock.
- Dock: The dock in the images was described as more rounded than the original Switch dock.
Nintendo Wire noted that the images’ validity was being debated and did not verify them as authentic. The report also said a subreddit moderator corroborated receiving images from the leaker; that supports the account of image sharing, but does not independently establish the hardware’s authenticity or the images’ provenance. What did Nintendo later confirm?
Nintendo revealed Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, and announced that the system would be released on June 5, 2025. Its official announcement documented the console and dock, as well as product specifications and compatibility details. The later reveal allows readers to compare some reported features with official information, but it does not prove that the December images themselves came from Nintendo or depicted final hardware.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Dock and Joy-Con
Nintendo’s official support comparison says Switch 2 Joy-Con controllers attach magnetically and that the Switch 2 dock has rounded edges and a LAN port. The original Switch dock is squared. Those official details broadly match elements described in the December report, but a match between a reported image and a later specification is not authentication of the image. Storage, screen and TV output
Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage and a 7.9-inch LCD screen for Switch 2. Additional storage uses microSD Express cards. In docked mode, the system can output at up to 4K, but Nintendo specifies a maximum of 60 frames per second at 4K. The up-to-120-fps figure applies to supported lower-resolution output; the TV and game must support the relevant mode. Nintendo also lists a maximum 120 Hz variable refresh rate for the system screen. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results. Games and the older AC adapter
Nintendo says compatible physical and digital games from the original Switch can be played on Switch 2, while some games are unsupported or not fully compatible. That qualification matters: it is not accurate to say that every Switch game works.

How should the December images be judged against the reveal?
Keep three questions separate: what an image appeared to show, what its poster claimed, and what Nintendo later confirmed. The contemporaneous coverage records the images’ appearance and attribution to NextHandheld; Nintendo’s subsequent materials establish official product details. Neither source, as described here, establishes the December files’ original source or conclusively authenticates each image.
A retrospective Nintendo Life timeline notes that some earlier rumors proved accurate, including magnetic Joy-Con and the Switch 2 name, and that unverified images posted on September 18, 2024, were later confirmed accurate after the reveal. That broader history helps explain why pre-reveal claims drew attention, but it concerns other images and rumors and does not verify the NextHandheld set. Verdict: were the leaked Nintendo Switch 2 images real?
The safest answer is that their authenticity remains unproven by the available reporting. Nintendo Wire called them alleged images and described unresolved doubts; Nintendo later confirmed several features that resembled details in the descriptions. That resemblance is not enough to say Nintendo leaked the images or that every image in the set was genuine.
A separate 2026 rumor about purported Zelda 40th-anniversary Switch 2 packaging is unrelated to the NextHandheld images. TechRadar reported on August 13, 2026, that Nintendo had not formally announced the special-edition hardware as of that report; it should not be treated as an official product announcement.
