What Are Nintendo Virtual Game Cards? How They Work on Switch and Switch 2

Nintendo Virtual Game Cards are the system Nintendo uses to manage eligible digital games and downloadable content (DLC) bought from the eShop. You can load or eject a purchase through Nintendo’s interface much like inserting or removing a physical game card. Once loaded, it can be played offline, and other users on that console can play it too. The feature works on supported Nintendo Switch-family consoles and Switch 2; it is not limited to new hardware.

How Virtual Game Cards work

Nintendo eShop digital games and DLC are represented as Virtual Game Cards. Loading a card makes that purchase available on the selected console; ejecting it removes that loaded access from the console. The game license and its save data are separate: loading a card elsewhere does not move a save file.

Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide says loaded games and DLC can be played without an internet connection, and other users on the same console can use them. This makes loading useful for offline play or for letting other local console users access an eligible purchase.

Using Virtual Game Cards across consoles

A Nintendo Account can use Virtual Game Cards on up to two compatible systems, in any combination of Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch consoles. To add a second console, link the systems once while they are near each other and connected to the internet. After pairing, they can be separated and cards loaded as needed. Nintendo’s support guide and feature page describe this setup.

  • Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
  • Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
  • Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer

Virtual Game Cards are available on Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED with the required system update; Nintendo says availability on those systems began in late April 2025. Switch 2 also supports the feature. The specific games and DLC available to a console still depend on compatibility with that console.

Can you lend digital Switch games to family?

Eligible Virtual Game Cards can be lent to members of the owner’s Nintendo Account family group. Nintendo’s current feature page allows up to three simultaneous loans. Each borrower can hold one game at a time on one console for up to 14 days. Lending requires local wireless communication and an internet connection. A borrower may return a game early; the owner may also take it back early if the borrower’s system is online and the game is not being played.

Not every purchase is lendable. Nintendo identifies some Nintendo Switch Online member-exclusive games as examples of exclusions, and its regional pages may describe eligibility differently. Check the individual title in Nintendo’s interface rather than assuming every eShop purchase can be shared. See Nintendo’s Virtual Game Cards feature page, Switch 2 FAQ, and April 2, 2025 announcement for the stated limits and setup requirements.

What happens to save data when a card is moved or lent?

Save data stays on the system where it was created; lending or loading the game on another console does not transfer the save. To continue the same game on a different system, use a supported save-data transfer or Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud Backup where available. Nintendo explains these distinctions in its Virtual Game Card Guide and Switch 2 FAQ.

Switch 2 and original Switch compatibility

Virtual Game Cards can be loaded or lent between Switch 2 and an original Switch-family system only for Nintendo Switch games. A Switch 2-exclusive game cannot run on an original Switch. A Switch 2 Edition game can run there only as its Nintendo Switch version, without the Switch 2-specific enhancements. Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ and feature page outline these generation limits.

Virtual Game Cards or Online License Settings?

Nintendo also offers Online License Settings as an alternative way to access digital purchases. The trade-off is between the broader system reach of online licensing and the offline access and console-level sharing of a loaded Virtual Game Card.

Access method Systems Who can play Internet requirement Same game on multiple systems
Virtual Game Card Up to two systems per Nintendo Account Any user on the console where the card is loaded Internet and proximity are required for initial pairing; loading or ejecting involves internet. Loaded content can then be played offline. Nintendo says neither method permits the same game to run simultaneously on multiple systems.
Online License Settings Can support three or more systems Users linked with the purchasing Nintendo Account An online check is needed to start a game. Nintendo says neither method permits the same game to run simultaneously on multiple systems.

These differences are described in Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ. If offline play or access for other users on a console matters most, load a Virtual Game Card. If you need the purchasing account’s linked users to access purchases across more than two systems and can meet the online check, Online License Settings may fit better.

What you need to use the feature

  • A Nintendo Account with digital games or DLC bought through Nintendo eShop.
  • A supported Switch-family console or Switch 2 with the required system update where applicable.
  • Internet access, and nearby consoles, for initial pairing; internet access when loading or ejecting cards.
  • For lending, a borrower in the owner’s Nintendo Account family group, plus local wireless and internet communication.

You do not need to buy Switch 2 hardware just to use Virtual Game Cards: the feature also supports updated original Switch-family systems. Switch 2 hardware is relevant if you want to play Switch 2-exclusive games or use Switch 2 Edition enhancements.
