Fan noise and other console sounds can be mistaken for PSU noise, and listening alone cannot confirm the source. Use the sound’s timing and any other symptoms to describe the problem; if the console behaves abnormally, smells unusual, or gets too hot, unplug it and seek qualified service.
Can you tell whether a PS4 Pro’s power supply is making the noise?
Not reliably from pitch or apparent location alone. PS4 Pro repair discussions include conflicting explanations for similar noises, so a report of “coil whine” is not a diagnosis. One iFixit Answers user described noise linked to gameplay and reported that replacing the PSU stopped it on their console. That is an individual repair report, not evidence that every gameplay-linked whine comes from the PSU or that replacement will solve every case.
Sony’s general guidance for power adapters and transformers says some humming or buzzing can occur. It also notes that excessive noise may relate to a transformer problem or AC line-voltage quality, and that changes in loudness at different times may point to the AC supply. This is general adapter and transformer guidance, not a PS4 Pro-specific test for its internal power supply.
What to observe before arranging service
These observations can help you explain the symptom to a repairer, but none independently confirms a component fault:

- Does the noise begin or become more noticeable during a game, or does it also occur when the console is idle or in standby?
- Does it seem to change as the fan speeds up or slows down?
- Does its loudness vary at different times of day?
- Can you confidently locate it at the PSU, rather than merely near the rear of the console?
Do not stop the fan by hand to test whether the sound changes. If the source is uncertain, report what the noise does and when it occurs rather than presenting a suspected PSU fault as confirmed.
When to unplug the console
Sony’s PS4 Pro Safety Guide, for model CUH-7115B, says to stop use, unplug the AC power cord and disconnect other cables immediately if the device behaves abnormally, produces unusual sounds or smells, or becomes too hot. It also says: “To avoid electrical shock, do not open the enclosure. Refer servicing to qualified personnel only.” Treat unusual noise together with abnormal operation, smell, or excessive heat as a reason to stop using the console and arrange qualified service—not as a cue to open it and investigate.

Should you replace the PS4 Pro power supply?
Consider a replacement only after diagnosis supports the PSU as the source. An iFixit replacement guide documents PSU removal, but the procedure involves disassembling the console; the guide’s existence does not make the repair suitable for every owner. Sony’s safety guidance directs servicing to qualified personnel.
There is no complete compatibility chart established here for PSU part numbers across PS4 Pro chassis revisions and regions. Before buying a “PS4 Pro power supply replacement,” have a qualified repairer or reliable seller verify both the console model and the label on the existing PSU. A generic product title is not proof that a part fits your particular console. The iFixit guide names a T8 Torx security screwdriver, but having that tool does not replace electrical-safety precautions or make internal repair appropriate for everyone.

What is known—and not known—about PS4 Pro coil whine
The available sources do not establish how prevalent PS4 Pro coil whine is, how often a PS4 Pro PSU fails, or how often PSU replacement resolves similar noise. Forum hypotheses and one successful individual repair cannot support a failure-rate estimate or a universal fix. The practical distinction is whether the console has concerning accompanying symptoms and whether a qualified diagnosis actually identifies the PSU.
