You can play retro games through a subscription catalog, a licensed modern release, or compatible original cartridges. The right choice depends first on the specific game you want: no service or console includes every classic, and access can depend on your region, device, subscription tier, or cartridge compatibility.

Choose how you want to play

Start with the game, not the system label. Look for the exact title in the relevant live catalog or release listing, then choose the access model that fits how long you expect to play and what hardware you have.

Route What it offers What to check
Subscription catalog Selected classic games available through a platform service. Nintendo documents libraries spanning several Nintendo systems; PlayStation lists a Classics Catalog. Whether the game is listed for your region and device; the required tier; whether an active membership or internet check is needed.
Licensed re-release or collection A specific older game or curated group of games released for a modern platform. Atari, for example, describes Flashback Classics collections for PlayStation and Xbox. The exact edition, included games, platform, and current availability. Check whether it is a collection or an individual release.
Hardware that plays original cartridges A physical-media option for compatible games. Atari says its 2600+ supports most Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges and provides HDMI output. Compatibility of the exact cartridge, its condition, the display connection, and whether the game belongs to one of those systems.

There is no universally best route. Compare the games you can actually access, the cost over your intended play period, whether access continues only while subscribed, fit with your devices, cartridge ownership and compatibility, and setup convenience.

Use a subscription catalog

Nintendo Switch Online classic games

Nintendo Support says an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is required for its Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, and Virtual Boy libraries. Nintendo also says periodic internet access may be needed to validate membership status when opening a classic library. Check Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online information and the current local game listings for the title and access terms you need.

PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog

PlayStation says Premium members can stream games from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog to PS4, PS5, or PC. Streaming support does not mean every classic is available on every device or in every region; check the live PlayStation Plus game catalog and the service terms for your location and platform.

Buy a licensed re-release or collection

A licensed release can be a better fit if you want a particular game or curated set without relying on a subscription catalog. Atari describes Flashback Classics collections for PlayStation and Xbox. Before buying, confirm the named edition, platform, and full included-game list: a collection name alone does not tell you whether it contains the game you want or whether it is currently sold for your device.

Play original cartridges on compatible hardware

If you already own cartridges—or want to collect them—a cartridge-compatible console can preserve the physical-media experience while connecting to a modern display. Atari lists the 2600+ with HDMI output, an included joystick, and a bundled multi-game cartridge; Atari says the device uses emulation technology.

Atari’s product FAQ says, “The 2600+ can play both Atari original 2600 and Atari 7800 cartridges, and cartridges from the Atari XP program.” The product page qualifies compatibility as “most,” not all, cartridges, and provides compatibility information. Check the exact cartridge against Atari’s 2600+ product and compatibility information before buying; condition also matters when purchasing used media.

Check these details before you commit

  1. Find the exact game. Search the current official catalog or release listing; a system family or service label is not proof that a particular title is included.
  2. Confirm region and device. Check that the listing applies to your country and that the game works on the console or PC you plan to use.
  3. Read the access conditions. For catalog games, verify the subscription tier, active-membership requirement, and any connectivity requirement. For a re-release, check whether you are buying a collection or a single game.
  4. Verify physical compatibility. For cartridges, check the exact model against the manufacturer’s compatibility information, inspect used media, and confirm the console’s display connection suits your setup.
  5. Compare cost over your play period. Consider the ongoing cost of a subscription against the price of a release or compatible hardware and media. Which is preferable depends on the titles you want and how long you expect to play.

Stay with authorized ways to play

For a straightforward consumer choice, focus on official subscription catalogs, licensed releases, and lawfully acquired media used with compatible hardware. The U.S. preservation rule in 37 CFR 201.40 is narrow: it sets conditions for qualifying libraries, archives, and museums, including limits on commercial advantage and on making games available outside eligible institutions’ physical premises. It is not a general authorization for consumers to download or share copyrighted game files. The cited rule is U.S.-specific and does not establish the law in other countries.
