Yes—Sony’s public plans show PlayStation continuing to build live-service expertise and support selected ongoing games, with Helldivers 2 among its strongest examples. But the game did not single-handedly “save” the strategy: Sony’s own account points to a selective portfolio, the failure of Concord to attract enough players, and a business that still includes major single-player releases.
Is PlayStation still making live-service games?
Yes. Sony’s May 2025 corporate strategy presentation anticipated further growth in its Studio business and identified Helldivers 2 and Destiny 2 as ongoing titles, alongside new releases including Marathon. Sony’s 2025 Corporate Report likewise says SIE continues to cultivate live-services expertise. It cites MLB The Show, Helldivers 2, Gran Turismo, and Destiny 2 as recurring successes while preparing Marathon. The report describes diversification, not a replacement of PlayStation’s single-player business: it also says the company’s IP remains strong in single-player games. Sony Corporate Report 2025.
What did Helldivers 2 contribute?
Helldivers 2 gave Sony a prominent example of a live-service game reaching a large audience across platforms. In a 2024 investor presentation, Sony called it a “Live Service Focus” title and reported more than 12 million sell-through units for PS5 and PC as of May 5, 2024. That is an early, dated sales figure—not a current player count or a measure of the game’s individual share of Sony’s revenue. Sony Business Segment Meeting 2024.

Sony’s FY2025 second-quarter speech transcript later said live-service games overall accounted for more than 40% of first-party software revenue. The figure covers Sony’s live-service portfolio, not Helldivers 2 alone. The same transcript said Helldivers 2 performed extremely well after its Xbox release, bringing in new Xbox users while engagement increased on PS5 and PC. In an August 12, 2026 announcement, Sony said more than 22.9 million players had joined Helldivers 2 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as of August 9, 2026. That cross-platform player figure is distinct from the 2024 sell-through number. Sony also announced the game’s addition to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for Extra and Premium members. Did Helldivers 2 save Sony’s live-service strategy?
There is no evidence in Sony’s statements that one game alone caused the company to continue its live-service strategy. The more accurate conclusion is that Helldivers 2 is a clear success within a broader effort that Sony intends to pursue selectively. Its results demonstrate the potential of the model; they do not prove that every live-service game can reproduce them.

The clearest counterexample is Concord. On October 29, 2024, SIE said the game had not reached enough players and announced that it would sunset the game and close Firewalk Studios. In the same update, SIE CEO Hermen Hulst said: “We will take the lessons learned from Concord and continue to advance our live service capabilities to deliver future growth in this area.” The statement makes both sides of Sony’s position explicit: a project can be stopped, while the company continues developing the capability. Live-service games can generate ongoing engagement and recurring content, but they also require continued development and operations. Sony’s public materials frame the decision as portfolio management: choose projects with potential, pay attention to financial discipline, and balance risk and return across a slate rather than treating every title as a sure thing. This approach helps explain why Concord’s closure does not contradict Sony’s stated plans. The company can stop a game that has not found a sufficient audience, apply lessons from that outcome, and continue backing other titles. Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki described the broader direction in May 2025 as “Building on our momentum and results to date and working with a laser-like focus to realize our long-term Creative Entertainment Vision.” That is a corporate strategy statement, rather than a specific promise about any one live-service game. How can players access Helldivers 2?
Sony’s cited materials establish Helldivers 2 as a PS5 and PC game; its later announcement also lists Xbox Series X|S. As of August 12, 2026, Sony said the game was in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for Extra and Premium members. Catalog access is through a subscription, not permanent ownership. Availability and subscription terms can vary by region and change, so check the current PlayStation Store listing and local PlayStation Plus terms before subscribing.
The Game Catalog addition is also a distribution decision, not proof that Sony is shifting the whole live-service strategy toward subscriptions. Sony marketing executive Mary Yee said the addition was intended to strengthen PlayStation Plus and give members more opportunities to discover and engage with games.
