Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness is already available in the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics catalog, not still on the way. Nintendo announced its arrival on March 17, 2026. To play, you need a Nintendo Switch 2 and a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership; Nintendo also says Pokémon from Game Boy Advance titles cannot be transferred to this version.

Is Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness on Switch Online?

Yes. Nintendo’s US announcement on March 17, 2026 said the GameCube adventure was available in the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics catalog. Nintendo Australia had first announced on March 2 that it would join the service during March.

The game follows a young trainer working to stop Cipher, a group that has been turning Pokémon into Shadow Pokémon. Its arrival gives subscribers a way to play the GameCube title through Nintendo’s current classics catalog.

What do you need to play it?

  • Console: Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo says the GameCube catalog is exclusive to Switch 2.
  • Membership: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The Expansion Pack is required for access to the GameCube catalog.
  • Regional access: Nintendo cautions that the service is not available in every country. Check the Nintendo website for your region for availability and membership pricing.

Nintendo’s US game listing describes the catalog game as “Regular Price: Free.” That means it is included with the qualifying membership, not that the membership itself is free.

Can you transfer Pokémon from Game Boy Advance games?

No. Nintendo’s March 17, 2026 US announcement warns: “Please note that you will not be able to transfer Pokémon from Game Boy Advance titles to this title.” Do not assume the Switch 2 catalog version can import Pokémon from Game Boy Advance games.

Do you need a GameCube controller?

No controller requirement is established in Nintendo’s announcement. Nintendo’s GameCube Classics page lists a wireless Nintendo GameCube controller as an accessory for the catalog, so it is an optional choice if you prefer that style of controller.

How the release date changed from “coming” to “available”

Nintendo Australia’s March 2 Pokémon Day article said the game would join Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack in March, “only on Nintendo Switch 2.” Nintendo’s US announcement on March 17 then described it as available. The original announcement is therefore out of date as a future-release notice.
