Sony revealed the PlayStation 5 Pro on September 10, 2024, and set its launch for November 7, 2024. The upgrade is substantial on paper: Sony said the Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the standard PS5, enabling up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay. That last figure is Sony’s claim, not a promise of the same improvement in every game.
PS5 Pro is no longer awaiting a reveal
The original “could be revealed this week” framing is out of date. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, and named November 7, 2024 as its release date. Sony’s announcement and launch details describe the hardware changes and their intended benefits.

How large is the GPU upgrade?
Sony compared PS5 Pro with the “current PS5” in its September 10, 2024 announcement. It said the Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and memory that is 28% faster. Sony said these changes enable up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay.
Those are manufacturer-stated comparisons and a maximum rendering claim. “Up to 45%” should not be read as a universal frame-rate increase or a guarantee that every game will render 45% faster. The cited announcement does not establish a game-by-game result or an independent benchmark for that figure.

What else is new beyond the GPU figures?
Advanced ray tracing
Sony also highlighted advanced ray tracing, which is intended to improve the way games render lighting effects. The announcement identifies it as a PS5 Pro capability, but does not quantify a general performance gain from ray tracing.
AI-driven image upscaling with PSSR
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI-driven upscaling technology. It is another part of the Pro’s visual upgrade story, alongside the stronger GPU and ray tracing; it is not the same thing as a guaranteed increase in a game’s frame rate.

What this means if you are deciding whether to buy
The specifications point to a more capable console, but they do not by themselves tell you how much better a particular game will look or run. The evidence cited here does not establish current regional pricing or availability, nor independent, game-by-game performance results. For a buying decision, check the current price where you live and whether the games you play support PS5 Pro enhancements; treat Sony’s 45% rendering figure as a stated maximum, not an expected result for every title.
Storage expansion
Sony’s CFI-71XX safety guide lists an M.2 SSD expansion connector. If you plan to expand storage, use a compatible M.2 SSD and check Sony’s current requirements before selecting a drive; the guide does not establish that any particular model is compatible.
