Recent US reporting instead found used and refurbished PS5 Pro listings above Sony’s recommended price, while Gumtree reported increased UK interest in pre-owned consoles after Sony raised prices. Those figures describe asking prices and buyer enquiries—not confirmed sales or scalper profits.
What the reported PS5 prices show
The most striking recent examples concern the PS5 Pro in the United States. On October 6, 2026, Tom’s Guide reported GameStop pre-owned and refurbished PS5 Pro listings at $1,329, with third-party listings on several retail platforms reaching as high as $1,700. The coverage described those units as used, refurbished, or open box, and said new units were out of stock at the stores it checked.

These are reported asking prices, not a record of completed transactions. They also concern one model and a particular reported stock situation; they do not establish the typical resale price of every PS5. A secondary aggregator’s September 15, 2026 snapshot showed five PS5 Digital Edition observations ranging from $320 to $479.99, but that small, mixed-condition sample is too limited to serve as a market benchmark or prove an all-time low.
Compare resale listings with Sony’s current recommended prices
Sony’s US recommended prices took effect April 2, 2026. The recommended price is a reference point, not a guarantee that a retailer has stock or sells at that amount.

Why are some used PS5 Pro listings above retail?
The reported high listings coincided with new PS5 Pro units being out of stock at the stores Tom’s Guide checked. When a sought-after model is hard to find through ordinary retail, third-party sellers may ask more than the recommended price. That explains why an above-retail listing can appear; it does not show that a buyer paid that amount, that the listing sold, or that the seller made a profit.
Model and condition matter. The highest figures in that report were for used, refurbished, or open-box PS5 Pro units and third-party listings—not a demonstrated market price for a new PS5 or Digital Edition.
What rising UK enquiries say—and what they do not
TechRadar reported Gumtree’s UK figures showing enquiries for pre-owned consoles up 93% year over year and 30% against the March weekly average following Sony’s April 2 price change. London enquiries reportedly rose 129%.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThose are Gumtree enquiry measures, not completed sales or a census of the UK resale market. They suggest increased interest on that platform after the price change, but they do not show how many consoles sold, what buyers paid, or whether demand rose on other marketplaces. Sony’s stated reason for the increase was “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”

Do the figures prove scalpers are profiting?
No. A listing above Sony’s recommended price establishes only an asking-price premium. To calculate net profit, you would need to know the seller’s acquisition cost, shipping and taxes, marketplace fees, and the price of a completed sale. The reported listings do not establish those inputs, so the $1,329 and up-to-$1,700 figures should not be described as scalper earnings.
Sony’s own shipment data is also not a measure of local store stock or resale prices. Its hardware table reports 16.0 million PS5 units shipped into the channel in FY2025, down from 18.5 million in FY2024, and 1.6 million in FY2026 Q1. Sell-in figures provide broad supply context, but cannot by themselves explain availability at a particular retailer or the price of a second-hand console.
How to judge a used or refurbished PS5 offer
Compare like with like before deciding whether a listing is a bargain or an inflated ask:
- Model: Confirm whether it is a PS5, Digital Edition, or PS5 Pro. Their recommended prices differ.
- Condition: Separate new, used, refurbished, and open-box listings; a lower price is not directly comparable if condition differs.
- Seller and protection: Check who is selling the console and what warranty, return window, or buyer protection applies.
- Total cost: Compare the full checkout price, including delivery and applicable charges, with the recommended price for your territory.
- Evidence of the price: Treat an advertised price as an asking price unless the marketplace confirms a completed sale.
Why “lower than ever” is not established
Sony’s US launch recommended prices in 2020 were $399.99 for the Digital Edition and $499.99 for the disc-drive model. Sony’s current recommended prices are higher, not lower. Those launch figures are not resale benchmarks: the models, condition, geography, and date differ, so comparing them directly with today’s used listings would be misleading.
There is no comprehensive comparable series here covering every PS5 model, condition, and geography over time. The available examples support a more limited conclusion: resale prices and buyer interest vary by model, market, condition, and stock situation. They do not establish an all-time low across PS5 resales, or verified scalper profits.
