Why Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team Has the Best Personality Quiz

Red Rescue Team’s quiz does more than assign a Pokémon: it makes the result part of the game’s central transformation premise.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team has the best personality quiz because its answers do more than assign a fun label: they decide which Pokémon the player becomes, tying the test directly to the game’s central premise. That is an argued preference, not an objective ranking—but the quiz’s role in the story gives it a strong case.

Why the quiz matters in Red Rescue Team

The original Red Rescue Team opens with a transformation: the player was human and has become a Pokémon in a world without humans. The personality test makes that premise personal by selecting the Pokémon the player will control. Nintendo’s instruction manual puts the mechanic plainly: “The Pokémon you play will be chosen based on how you answer the questions of the personality test at the beginning.” Nintendo’s official instruction manual is the source for that description.

That connection is the quiz’s strongest design choice. Its result is not a side activity or a personality label detached from play; it answers the opening question, “Which Pokémon will you become?” and establishes the player’s role in the adventure.

What the game data says about the test

Data Crystal’s community-maintained technical documentation lists 56 personality-test question entries for the original game and describes answers assigning points among nature categories. The listed categories include Hardy, Docile, Brave, Jolly, Impish, Naive, Timid, Hasty, Sassy, Calm, Relaxed, Lonely, and Quirky. Data Crystal’s Red Rescue Team personality-test documentation is a reverse-engineered account of the game data, rather than a consumer-facing explanation from Nintendo.

#1 Best Overall
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team
  • For the first time ever, the player is a Pokemon and speaks & interacts with other characters in a world populated only by Pokemon
  • A deep, involving and dramatic story brings the player into a world of Pokemon not seen or experienced before
  • Strategic battles enhance the adventure
  • Randomly generated dungeons make every mission unique

The 56 figure counts entries documented in the game data; it does not mean every player is necessarily asked all 56 questions in a single run. The documentation also describes point values assigned to answers, but that alone does not establish that every answer carries equal weight.

Why “best” is a matter of criteria

No cited source ranks game personality quizzes or measures which one players prefer. Calling this the best is therefore a subjective verdict. The case rests on three design qualities:

Rank #2
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX (Nintendo Switch)
  • Play as a Pokémon as you talk to, befriend and fight alongside your favourite characters
  • Revisit the classic in this beautiful watercolour remake of the first Mystery Dungeon - on Nintendo Switch for the very first time
  • Your personality decides who you are. Answer questions about yourself to see which of the 16 Pokémon starters you will become
  • Meet over 386 Pokémon and go on adventures with your handpicked rescue team to save the world from natural disasters
  • Explore Mystery dungeons that change terrain, enemies and rewards every time you enter?
  • Story connection: the test determines the Pokémon the player becomes, matching the game’s transformation premise.
  • Consequential outcome: the answers select the player character, rather than merely offering a descriptive result.
  • Underlying structure: the documented nature-category scoring gives the test a defined game-data framework, even though the consumer-facing manual keeps the explanation simple.

Those qualities do not prove that Red Rescue Team’s quiz is more accurate, fair, or enjoyable than every alternative. They explain why it feels unusually integral to its own game.

Red Rescue Team and Rescue Team DX are different releases

Red Rescue Team is the original Game Boy Advance game. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is a later Nintendo Switch reimagining of the original Red and Blue Rescue Team games, not simply the same release with an interchangeable quiz. The Pokémon.com description says: “A personality quiz at the start of the game will determine which Pokémon you’ve become—or you can make that choice on your own.” The official Rescue Team DX page confirms that players can choose a Pokémon rather than accept the quiz result.

That option changes the balance of agency: the quiz can still frame the opening, but DX lets the player override its outcome. The available descriptions do not establish that the wording, scoring, or results are identical between DX and the original Game Boy Advance game, so the two should not be treated as mechanically interchangeable.

What makes this quiz memorable

The appeal is not that a quiz can reveal a definitive personality. It is that the game turns a set of answers into a character and then makes that character part of its fiction. When a game asks what Pokémon you are and uses the answer to begin your journey, the quiz becomes a small piece of role-playing rather than a detached novelty. That premise-to-result connection is why Red Rescue Team has a persuasive claim to the best personality quiz in games.
