The company tied the decision to the cancellation of Life by You, which it described as the studio’s sole project. Paradox said Tectonic had led the game’s development since 2019 and employed 24 people at the time of the announcement.
Why was Life by You canceled?
Paradox announced on June 17, 2024, that Life by You would not be released. CEO Fredrik Wester said the game would not meet the company’s expectations. Paradox’s stated view was that a version it could be satisfied with remained too far away; the company did not publish an independent assessment of the game’s quality.
In a longer explanation that day, Deputy CEO Mattias Lilja said Paradox had delayed the game twice and used a pause to reassess it. He described the path to a release the company could support as too long and uncertain, adding: “When we come to a point where we believe that more time will not get us close enough to a version we would be satisfied with, then we believe it is better to stop.” Lilja’s explanation gives the company’s rationale, not a detailed account of its internal deliberations.
Why is Paradox closing Tectonic?
Paradox connected the studio decision directly to the cancellation. In its June 18 announcement, Wester said: “Sadly, with cancellation of their sole project we have to take the tough decision to close down the studio.” The announcement described Tectonic as a wholly owned studio in Berkeley, California, and said it had led development of Life by You since 2019.

The company announced a decision to cease operations; the available announcement does not establish the later operational status of the studio or what ultimately happened to its employees.

What does the MSEK 208 figure mean?
MSEK 208 means 208 million Swedish kronor. Paradox said that amount represented a write-down of Life by You’s total capitalized development costs and would negatively affect the company’s Q2 2024 result. It is not a disclosed total for all project spending, total losses, or the cost of closing Tectonic.

How many people worked at Paradox Tectonic?
Paradox’s June 18, 2024 announcement said the studio employed 24 people. That is the company’s headcount figure at the time of the announcement; it does not establish later employment outcomes.
