PS5 vs Xbox Series X: Which Console Should You Buy?

Choose PS5 for its games, PS4 continuity, or PlayStation services; choose Xbox Series X if its library and four-generation compatibility suit you better. Compare local prices, discs, and subscription value before buying.

There is no universal winner in the PS5 vs Xbox Series X decision. Choose PS5 if its games, your PS4 library, or PlayStation services are the better fit; choose Xbox Series X if you prefer its game library or want its backward compatibility across four Xbox generations. Before buying, compare local console prices, the specific games you plan to play, disc needs, and the subscription benefits you will actually use.

Start with the games and people you care about

Make a shortlist of games you expect to play, then check each game’s current platform availability. Release plans and platform lineups can change, so a static list of “exclusives” is a poor substitute for checking the titles that matter to you. Also consider where your friends play if you expect to play online together.

  • Lean toward PS5 if the PlayStation games you want, your existing PlayStation library, or PlayStation Plus benefits are the deciding factors.
  • Lean toward Xbox Series X if the Xbox games you want or access to compatible games from earlier Xbox generations matter more to you.

Can you play games you already own?

Both consoles offer backward compatibility, but their official descriptions emphasize different libraries. PlayStation describes PS5 as fully backwards compatible with the PS4 library. Microsoft says Xbox Series X supports thousands of games across four Xbox generations. Those broad statements do not establish that every title works; check a particular game if it is central to your decision. PlayStation’s PS5 overview and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X page describe the platforms’ compatibility.

What do the consoles cost?

Sony’s US recommended retail prices, announced March 27, 2026 and effective April 2, 2026, are listed below. They are not guaranteed retailer prices, and they are not a direct comparison with Xbox pricing: a current, comparable Xbox US price was not established in the source material for this article. Check local retailer prices and regional pricing before buying.

PlayStation model US recommended retail price Price timing and qualification
PS5 $649.99 Announced March 27, 2026; effective April 2, 2026. Sony US recommended price.
PS5 Digital Edition $599.99 Announced March 27, 2026; effective April 2, 2026. Sony US recommended price.
PS5 Pro $899.99 Announced March 27, 2026; effective April 2, 2026. Sony US recommended price.

When announcing the change, Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President, Global Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment, said: “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.” Sony’s announcement gives prices for the US, UK, Europe, and Japan, and directs buyers elsewhere to check local retailers or PlayStation Direct where available.

For a fair household-cost comparison, include the console edition, the games you need, any storage you want to add, and subscriptions you expect to keep. Do not infer that one platform is cheaper from Sony’s US recommended prices alone.

Do you need a disc drive?

A disc drive matters if you buy used or discounted physical games, lend or borrow discs, or want to watch UHD Blu-ray. Check the exact console edition and its disc-drive arrangement before purchasing; do not assume every edition handles discs the same way. Sony’s historical PS5 launch information describes the original disc-equipped and Digital Edition models, but it is not a current model-by-model comparison. Sony’s 2020 hardware details are useful as launch-era context, not as current pricing.

Sony said on July 1, 2026 that production of physical discs for new PlayStation-console game releases will be discontinued starting January 2028. That announcement concerns production of future new releases; it does not say that existing discs or current disc-based gameplay will stop working. Sony’s support page is the cited source for the announcement.

How much will subscriptions add?

Compare the games in the current catalog with the games you will actually play, your need for online multiplayer, and the renewal cost. A subscription catalog can change, so do not treat access to a game as permanent ownership.

PlayStation Plus

PlayStation Plus Essential includes online multiplayer and monthly games. Extra adds the Game Catalog; Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming. Sony’s US listing shows Essential at $10.99 monthly, $27.99 every three months, or $79.99 every twelve months. These are Sony US prices on the official listing; check the live plan selector for current prices and the catalog for availability. Sony’s US PlayStation Plus page lists the Essential price, while Sony’s tier and catalog information describes benefits and notes that catalog availability varies over time and by plan.

Xbox subscription comparison

Xbox subscription prices and tier details are not established here, so no equal-date price comparison with PlayStation Plus is possible. Check Microsoft’s current local plan options and catalog before treating a subscription as part of the Xbox’s value. Compare the actual benefits and games rather than assuming similarly named or priced plans offer equivalent access.

Will performance decide it?

Do not pick a console based only on launch specifications or a blanket claim that one is faster or more powerful. Performance depends on the game, its settings, and how it is implemented. This article does not have a controlled, current, game-by-game comparison to establish a console-wide winner. If performance is your deciding factor, compare the specific games you play and the modes or settings you care about. Sony’s PS5 Pro page names games receiving enhanced updates, but those examples are not a comparative performance test. Sony’s PS5 Pro overview describes those game enhancements.

What about storage?

PS5 storage can be expanded with a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD; an expansion drive is not a requirement for every buyer. Check the requirements for your particular console model and SSD before choosing one. Sony documents the supported category and installation requirements in its PS5 M.2 SSD installation guide. This does not establish that any particular drive is compatible.

A practical decision checklist

  1. List your must-play games. Verify the current platform for each title and consider where your friends play.
  2. Check your existing library. Look up specific PS4 or Xbox titles you hope to carry forward instead of relying only on broad compatibility descriptions.
  3. Decide whether you need discs. Consider used games, lending, and UHD Blu-ray, then confirm the drive arrangement on the exact console edition.
  4. Compare local total costs. Check retailer prices for both consoles in your region, then add games, optional storage, and any subscription you expect to use.
  5. Assess subscriptions by actual use. Compare current catalog titles, multiplayer needs, tier benefits, and renewal prices rather than assuming the catalog is fixed.
  6. Compare performance title by title if it matters. Look for matched comparisons of the games and settings you care about, not launch specifications alone.

Which console should you buy?

Buy PS5 if its game lineup, continuity with your PS4 library, or PlayStation Plus offering best matches what you want. Buy Xbox Series X if its games and compatibility with titles across Xbox generations are a better fit. If neither platform has a clear advantage for your library, decide using current local prices, disc requirements, and the subscriptions you would genuinely use.
