For a main-story playthrough of Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet, the best Pokémon are the ones that are useful across varied encounters—not simply the ones with the highest reputation. This is an editorial ranking for story-playthrough value, weighing practical team roles, matchup coverage, and the fact that some headline Pokémon are not ordinary early-team choices. It is not an official ranking or a competitive usage list.

There is no context-free strongest Pokémon. Pokémon Support says strength in the video game depends on training and the challenge; its examples include using Water against Fire and Fire against Grass. The ten below are candidates from the games, ranked by the usefulness lens stated here—not by a published win rate or official endorsement.

How this ranking works

This list focuses on a normal story run rather than a specific ranked-battle season. A Pokémon earns a higher place when it can contribute in a range of situations; its type and likely role matter more here than tournament results. Availability also matters: a powerful Legendary or later-game candidate may be less practical for building a team early. The official game roster establishes that these Pokémon appear in the Scarlet/Violet game presentation, but it does not establish their relative strength or detailed mechanics.

Pokémon Support’s guidance is a useful check on any “best Pokémon” list: the answer depends on what challenge you face and how you train. This ranking is therefore a recommendation for story-playthrough planning, not a universal verdict.

The 10 best Pokémon for a Scarlet or Violet story playthrough

1. Meowscarada

Meowscarada is the Grass-type final evolution of the Sprigatito line, one of the starter lines featured on the official Scarlet/Violet site. A starter is available from the beginning of a new adventure, which makes its value unusually dependable: it can develop alongside the rest of the team instead of needing to be found late. Its place at the top reflects that practical advantage and the broad usefulness a starter can bring across a varied story, not an official claim that it is the strongest Pokémon.

2. Skeledirge

Skeledirge is the final evolution of Fuecoco, another featured starter line. Like Meowscarada, its starter status makes it a straightforward foundation for a new team. It ranks highly for the same broad reason: a player can build around it from the outset and use it as part of a team designed to answer different challenges. The ordering between the starter evolutions is editorial, not a measured comparison of battle outcomes.

3. Quaquaval

Quaquaval completes the trio of starter-line finalists, evolving from Quaxly. It belongs on a practical story list because it is tied to a starter choice rather than being a roster name that only matters as a late-game target. As with the other starters, its inclusion does not mean it wins every matchup; Pokémon Support’s basic reminder still applies: choose and train a team for the challenge in front of you.

Rank #2
Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet Double Pack - Nintendo Switch
  • If you purchase either the physical or digital double pack, you will receive a 200 Poké Ball bonus via download codes* that can be entered in the Mystery Gift** feature in your game!
  • The packaged version of the double pack includes 1 physical Pokémon Scarlet game and 1 physical Pokémon Violet game
  • Catch, battle, and train Pokémon in the Paldea Region, a vast land filled with lakes, towering peaks, wastelands, small towns, and sprawling cities
  • Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea

4. Gholdengo

Gholdengo is among the Paldea Pokémon featured on the official game site and is a strong candidate for a list that considers the whole adventure rather than only starter availability. It ranks below the three starter finalists because the roster page alone does not establish when or how easily it can join a particular player’s team, and this article does not treat a featured roster entry as proof of superior performance.

5. Armarouge

Armarouge is another featured Paldea candidate. It merits consideration for a team that needs a distinct role or matchup option, but the evidence cited here does not establish exact story availability or a comparative performance advantage. Its position is a recommendation within this list’s broad team-usefulness lens, not a claim of universal superiority.

6. Ceruledge

Ceruledge also appears among the official site’s featured Paldea Pokémon. It is a reasonable candidate to weigh alongside Armarouge when planning a team, but this ranking does not claim either one is strictly better. Which is more useful to a player depends on the game, team composition, and encounters they need to handle.

Rank #3
Pokémon Scarlet - US Version
  • Embark on a new Pokémon adventure
  • Catch, battle, and train Pokémon in the Paldea Region, a vast land filled with lakes, towering peaks, wastelands, small towns, and sprawling cities.
  • Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea.
  • Embark on an independent study called the Treasure Hunt to gain new experiences, meet new people, and find your very own treasure.

7. Iron Valiant

Iron Valiant is a featured Paldea Pokémon and a plausible late-adventure team candidate. It ranks below the starter lines and other candidates because this story-focused list gives practical team-building value weight, and the official roster listing does not document how soon a player can obtain it. Its presence here should not be mistaken for a current competitive ranking.

8. Iron Bundle

Iron Bundle is another featured Pokémon worth considering for a story team, particularly if a player is looking beyond the starter lines. The available official roster material confirms its place in the game presentation, but it does not establish its story timing, matchup record, or a reason to rank it above the other candidates.

9. Roaring Moon

Roaring Moon rounds out the featured Paldea candidates in this list. It may be appealing to players assembling a team later in their adventure, but this ranking does not assume that an impressive roster profile automatically makes a Pokémon the most convenient choice for the whole story. A Pokémon’s value still depends on when it is available and what the rest of the team needs.

  • Discover a new species of Pokémon with the Pokémon Lets Go series
  • Catch Pokémon in the wild using a gentle throwing motion with either a Joy-Con controller or a Poké Ball Plus accessory, which will light up, vibrate, and make sounds to bring your adventure to life
  • See the world in style by customizing Pikachu and your Trainer with a selection of outfits
  • Connect to Pokémon GO* to transfer caught Kanto-region Pokémon, including Alolan and Shiny forms, as well as the newly discovered Pokémon, Meltan, from that game to this one

10. Koraidon or Miraidon

The official Scarlet/Violet site identifies Koraidon and Miraidon as Legendary Pokémon. They are obvious candidates when discussing the games’ most prominent Pokémon, but prominence and practical story-team value are not the same thing. This entry groups them as the version-associated Legendary choices rather than asserting that one is stronger. The roster source confirms their status, not a comparative ranking or an ordinary early-team role.

Why this is not a competitive top ten

Competitive rankings require a named format, a date, and results or usage data. The official page for the final ranked season, titled “Final Season: Ranked Battles Season 41 Is Underway!”, specifies Regulation Set I and allows Terastallizing. It describes eligible Pokémon drawn from Paldea Pokédex numbers 001–400, Kitakami 001–200, and Blueberry 001–242, with listed exceptions; teams may include no more than two listed restricted special Pokémon, and combatants are set to level 50. These are rules for that season, not permanent rules for every mode or evidence that one eligible species outperforms another.

The same season page says ranked battles match players with similar ranks and track rank through battle results. It also says final monthly rankings and rewards based on final rankings will not be announced for that season. Those details describe the season’s format and announcements; they do not supply a competitive top-ten list. Do not use this story ranking as a substitute for a dated competitive analysis.

Choose by the challenge, not the headline

Start with the team you actually have and the encounters you need to handle. If a matchup is causing trouble, adjust your team or training to address it; Pokémon Support’s examples—Water against Fire and Fire against Grass—illustrate the basic logic. The official Scarlet/Violet site presents the starter lines, Koraidon and Miraidon, and several of the Paldea candidates above, but it does not endorse this order or define a universal strongest Pokémon.
