Public allegations called the Ho-Oh illustration plagiarized; the company’s 29 July 2025 notice described a production error and did not use that term.
Which Pokémon TCG Pocket cards were affected?
The cards were the three-star immersive Ho-Oh ex and Lugia ex in the upcoming Wisdom of Sea and Sky expansion, according to The Pokémon Company’s notice dated 29 July 2025.
What did The Pokémon Company say happened?
The company said: “After internal review, we discovered that the card production team provided incorrect materials as official documents to the illustrator commissioned to create these cards.” It said the cards would temporarily display placeholder images while new artwork was prepared.
The notice also said the company was conducting a broader investigation “to ensure no similar issues exist elsewhere in the game.” That describes the investigation’s status when the notice was issued; the notice does not establish its eventual outcome.

- Includes all cards pictured
- May include reverse foil version
How did the plagiarism accusations fit in?
Public suspicions focused on whether the Ho-Oh art resembled fan art. Nintendo Life’s coverage provides context on the allegation and the artist’s clarification. The company’s English statement, however, did not call the art plagiarism, identify a specific alleged source image, or give a detailed account of the production timeline. Its stated explanation was that incorrect materials had been supplied as official references.
Those are distinct claims: plagiarism was the public accusation, while the production-material error was the company’s explanation. The official notice does not provide enough detail to independently establish how the incorrect materials related to the resemblance people noticed.
