Remove all eight yellow stakes—sometimes called orange stakes—to open the Icerend Shrine and trigger the Chien-Pao encounter. They are scattered across West Province and nearby South Province terrain, including cliffs, a coastal tunnel, waterfalls and Cascarrafa. Use the landmarks below rather than stake numbers, which vary between guides.

Where is the Icerend Shrine?

The Icerend Shrine is on Paldea’s western edge, near the Open Sky Titan area. It is the shrine associated with Chien-Pao, the Dark- and Ice-type Legendary Pokémon. Pulling all eight linked stakes opens the shrine and allows the encounter. GameSpot’s shrine guide and Serebii’s stake map identify the shrine and its requirement.

All eight Chien-Pao stake locations

Guides commonly call these yellow stakes; some call them orange. The color difference is only a naming variation. The directions below use landmarks because published guides do not consistently number or describe the positions in the same way. For exact map placement, Serebii provides mini-map images for all eight.

  1. Southwest of Cortondo, toward Alfornada: Look high on a cliff in the elevated terrain between Cortondo and Alfornada. Guide descriptions differ on the approach: one places a stake southwest of Cortondo, while another describes one north of town across a river. Check the local map rather than relying on a guide’s stake number. GameSpot and Nintendo Life give their respective landmark directions.
  2. East of Alfornada, by the waterfalls: Search the high ground at the top of a waterfall east of Alfornada. Another guide describes a stake farther down the mountain beside a wide river and waterfalls; use the map image to distinguish the precise spot from other nearby cliffs. GameSpot and Nintendo Life describe waterfall-side locations.
  3. Inside a coastal tunnel: A stake that can look like it is near the surface is underground. Enter the tunnel from the western-coast beach, or approach from the lower level of South Province (Area Four) toward South Province (Area Six). Follow the tunnel rather than searching only the cliffs above it. GameSpot and Nintendo Life describe the tunnel and approaches.
  4. West Province (Area One), north of Cortondo: Look on a cliff northwest of Cortondo, south of the West Province (Area One) Pokémon Center. The stake sits on elevated ground in this broader area. GameSpot and Nintendo Life both place one in this province area.
  5. On a plateau in a crater near the windmills: Search a small, circular plateau in a canyon or crater near a bridge and the wind farm. It is southeast of the shrine. GameSpot and Nintendo Life identify the plateau by the nearby windmills.
  6. On a cliff above ruins: Search the cliff south of Team Star’s Dark Crew headquarters, overlooking ruins. A nearby watchtower is another landmark mentioned for this plateau area. GameSpot and Nintendo Life describe the ruins and elevated ground.
  7. In a cliff nook near the Pokémon League map marker: Search between the cliffs, including the lower cliff area east of the ruins-side stake. A stake here can be easy to miss if you stay on the upper ridge. GameSpot and Nintendo Life describe the lower cliff and nook.
  8. Behind Cascarrafa Gym: Check behind the Gym, near a tree by the water. Both guides point to this tucked-away spot. GameSpot and Nintendo Life identify the Gym-side landmark.

How to open the shrine and start the encounter

  1. Find and pull all eight stakes associated with the Icerend Shrine. Serebii’s map shows the eight positions and confirms that removing them opens the shrine: Chien-Pao stake locations.
  2. Travel to the Icerend Shrine on Paldea’s western edge and interact with it to begin the Chien-Pao encounter. The shrine and Pokémon are identified in GameSpot’s guide.

Why guides use different stake colors

GameSpot, Nintendo Life and Serebii refer to this set as yellow, while Ludo calls it orange. These are differing guide labels for the same Chien-Pao stake group, not separate sets or a gameplay distinction. Ludo’s orange-stake guide uses the alternate term.
