For a general Pokémon Scarlet and Violet playthrough, Skeledirge is the best all-around Fire-type pick: it is straightforward to obtain as your Fuecoco starter evolves and is recommended for both story play and Tera Raids. This ranking weighs playthrough usefulness most heavily, then considers typing, battle role, and the differences between story, raid, and competitive play. The order is an editorial judgment, not an official ranking; DLC and expanded-roster Pokémon are labeled where relevant.

How this ranking works

There is no single Fire-type that is best for every job. Story teams benefit from reliable coverage and accessible Pokémon; Tera Raids reward specific support or damage roles; competitive battles depend on the rules and format in force. Game8’s guide reflects that split, recommending Skeledirge and Scovillain for story play, Skeledirge, Armarouge, and Iron Moth for raids, and Chi-Yu, Heat Rotom, and Torkoal for competitive play. Its guide was updated February 8, 2024, so its competitive recommendations are role examples, not confirmation of current ranked legality. (Game8’s Fire-type recommendations)

The ranking below favors broad playthrough usefulness while noting specialist strengths. Base-stat totals provide context, not a guarantee of in-game performance. The cited figures are Game8’s listed base stats in a guide last updated in 2024.

The 15 best Fire-types

1. Skeledirge

Best for: a dependable story-team anchor and a raid option. Choose Fuecoco as your starter; it evolves into Crocalor at level 16 and Skeledirge at level 36. Skeledirge’s Fire/Ghost typing and sturdy profile give it a distinct role, while Torch Song-centered story builds and an Unaware raid role illustrate how its use can change by mode. Game8 lists 104 HP, 100 Defense, 110 Special Attack, and 66 Speed (530 total), so it offers bulk and special offense rather than pace. (Nintendo Life’s Paldea Pokédex guide; Game8)

2. Chi-Yu

Best for: special offense and competitive-format teams where it is legal. Its Fire/Dark typing and exceptional listed 135 Special Attack make it an imposing attacker; Game8 also lists 120 Special Defense and 100 Speed (570 total). The same guide names it as a competitive pick, but its ranked-availability note dates to 2024 and should not be treated as a current rules check. (Game8)

3. Iron Moth

Best for: fast special damage and raid utility. Game8 recommends Iron Moth for Tera Raids, calling attention to debuff options and Fiery Dance. Its listed 140 Special Attack and 110 Speed (570 total) explain the offensive appeal, while 60 Defense is a reminder that it is not a bulky answer to every matchup. It belongs to the expanded roster rather than the original Paldea Pokédex, so availability depends on the game content and access you have. (Game8; Game8’s Fire-type roster; Nintendo Life)

4. Armarouge

Best for: a special-attacking raid build. Armarouge combines Fire/Psychic typing with 125 listed Special Attack and 100 Defense (525 total). Game8’s raid build emphasizes setup potential, making it a more deliberate attacker than a plug-in answer for every encounter. Its strengths contrast with Ceruledge’s physical approach, so the better pick depends on the moves and role your team needs. (Game8)

Rank #2

5. Ceruledge

Best for: physical offense with a different matchup profile from Armarouge. Its Fire/Ghost typing and listed 125 Attack, 100 Special Defense, and 85 Speed (525 total) support that role. Armarouge and Ceruledge share the same listed total, but their offensive stats and secondary types differ substantially. Ceruledge’s evolution item is version-specific; check which game version you are playing before planning to obtain it. (Game8; Game8’s Fire-type roster)

6. Gouging Fire

Best for: a powerful Fire/Dragon option for an expanded roster. Game8 includes Gouging Fire among the Fire types and its base-stat comparison. It is not a standard early Paldea-team choice: access depends on DLC and other roster availability, so it is most relevant to players with the required expanded content. (Game8; Game8)

7. Ogerpon (Hearthflame Mask)

Best for: a fast physical attacker in DLC play. This ranking refers specifically to Ogerpon wearing the Hearthflame Mask, not to every Ogerpon form. Game8’s table highlights its Speed and Attack profile; access requires the relevant DLC content. (Game8)

Rank #3

  • 3 FIRE FIGURES Collect the amazing Fire-type Pokémon Cyndaquil, Charmeleon, and Arcanine!
  • ICONIC POKEMON Your favorite Pokémon are together in this 3 Pack, ready to battle!

  • PERFECT GIFT The Pokémon Fire Theme 3 Pack is the ideal addition to any Pokémon fan’s team!
  • OFFICIAL PRODUCT An officially licensed Pokémon product from Jazwares.

8. Heat Rotom

Best for: competitive teams looking for Fire/Electric coverage and a pivot. Game8 describes a Choice Scarf role, pairing its typing with a speed-oriented item strategy. That is a format-dependent specialist use, not a blanket recommendation for an ordinary story team; check the ruleset you plan to play before building around it. (Game8)

9. Torkoal

Best for: slow, sun-supported teams and Trick Room. Its Drought ability can establish sun, and its Eruption role rewards keeping its HP high. The listed 140 Defense is offset by just 20 Speed (470 total), so Torkoal is a deliberate specialist rather than a flexible fast attacker. Game8 includes it among competitive options, but the viability of any build depends on current format rules and team context. (Game8)

10. Scovillain

Best for: story teams that want Grass and Fire coverage in one slot. Game8 recommends it for story play, and its Grass/Fire typing offers a different set of matchups from Fire-only choices. Sun synergy adds another possible team direction, though its dual typing also means it should not be selected as if it had the same defensive profile as a pure Fire type. (Game8)

Rank #4
Pokemon Center: Sitting Cuties: Infernape Plush # 392 - Generation 4-6 in
  • The Infernape Sitting Cuties Plush is weighted with microbeads, so it sits up when you put it on a flat surface. This palm-sized plush is a fun, charming way to show off a favorite Fire- and Fighting-type first partner Pokémon originally discovered in Sinnoh!
  • Sits up easily on a desk, shelf, or other flat surface
  • Care Instructions: Hand Wash Only. Line Dry.
  • Item Dimensions: 7.5 x 5.1 x 7 inches (19 x 12.9 x 17.7 cm)
  • Pokémon Center Original

11. Arcanine

Best for: a flexible Fire-type that can fit more than one role. Its broad stat profile and ability options give it room to adapt, but a strong stat total alone does not make it better than more specialized picks. Consider it when its available moves and ability suit the rest of your team rather than ranking it on numbers alone. (Game8)

12. Talonflame

Best for: players who prioritize speed. Talonflame’s appeal is acting quickly, with the trade-off that it has less bulk and offensive weight than several other candidates on this list. It can suit a team that values tempo, but is less compelling if you need a Fire-type to absorb hits or deliver heavy damage unaided. (Game8)

13. Volcarona

Best for: special offense built around setup. Game8’s stat table gives Volcarona a high Special Attack profile, but its value depends on getting the opportunity to set up and on the matchup. Treat the numbers as a useful comparison point, not proof that it will outperform a more immediate attacker in every battle. (Game8)

14. Paldean Tauros (Blaze Breed)

Best for: physical Fire/Fighting coverage. The Blaze Breed has useful Attack, Defense, and Speed for a physical option, and its Fighting secondary type distinguishes it from the other Fire choices here. Confirm the breed and version availability when planning a team; “Paldean Tauros” alone does not specify this Fire-associated form. (Game8)

15. Houndoom

Best for: an accessible Fire/Dark alternative, particularly when early-team utility matters. Its dual typing adds a different offensive and defensive profile from a single-type Fire pick. The exact point at which you can obtain it depends on route and version, so check your in-game map or Pokédex rather than assuming it is available at the start. (Game8; Nintendo Life)

Choose by what you want to do

Goal Strong options Why they fit
Story playthrough Skeledirge, Scovillain Game8 specifically recommends both for story play; Skeledirge is the straightforward starter-line choice, while Scovillain combines Grass and Fire coverage.
Tera Raids Skeledirge, Armarouge, Iron Moth Game8 names these as raid choices, with different roles: Skeledirge’s Unaware build, Armarouge’s setup potential, and Iron Moth’s debuffs and Fiery Dance.
Competitive examples Chi-Yu, Heat Rotom, Torkoal Game8’s 2024 guide uses them to illustrate distinct roles: special offense, a Choice Scarf pivot, and slow sun/Trick Room play. Verify current format legality and rules separately.

What Fire typing does—and does not—cover

Fire attacks are super effective against Bug, Grass, Ice, and Steel, but Fire Pokémon are weak to Ground, Rock, and Water. Those type matchups are useful for choosing a move or team partner; they do not account for secondary typings, abilities, or a particular opponent’s moves. (Smogon’s Scarlet/Violet Fire type chart)

Availability also changes what “best” means. The Paldea Pokédex contains 400 entries, while the DLC adds separate Kitakami and Blueberry Pokédexes; an expanded-roster Pokémon such as Iron Moth or DLC-linked choices such as Gouging Fire and Hearthflame Ogerpon are not equivalent to an option available to every base-game team.
