To read the Pokémon type chart, choose the attacking move’s type on the left and the defending Pokémon’s type across the top. The result shows type effectiveness: 2× is super effective, ½× is not very effective, and 0× means the move has no effect. This chart covers games from 2013 onward; type matchups can differ in older games and between versions.
How to read the Pokémon type chart
The chart below uses attack types for rows and defending types for columns. Find the type of the move being used, then follow that row to the defender’s type. Check the move itself: a Pokémon can use a move whose type differs from its own.
- 2×: Super effective; double damage at the type-effectiveness stage.
- 1×: Neutral effectiveness. The chart may show this as a blank cell.
- ½×: Not very effective; half damage at the type-effectiveness stage.
- 0×: No effect; the defender is immune to that attack type.
These are type-effectiveness multipliers, not a complete final-damage calculation. Other battle factors also affect damage. The official Pokémon type chart notes: “Please note that this chart is based on the latest game in the Pokémon series, and that type affinity may differ by game.”
All 18 Pokémon types: current matchup chart
This readable matrix is for games from 2013 onward. Rows are attack types; columns are defending types. Blank-equivalent neutral matchups are shown as 1×. The Pokémon Database labels its type chart for games from 2013 onward and notes that older generations differ.

How dual-type matchups combine
For a defender with two types, multiply the two matchup values. A weakness to one type can be canceled by a resistance to the other: Fire against Grass/Rock is neutral (2× against Grass multiplied by ½× against Rock = 1×). If both types are weak to the attack, the multipliers compound: Fire against Grass/Bug is 4× (2× × 2×).
Type effectiveness is not the whole damage calculation
Same-type attack bonus (STAB) is separate from the chart. The Pokémon Company’s Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Trainers Guide says a move that shares the user’s type receives an additional 1.5× basic damage. Its example combines a Fire user’s Fire move against Grass into 3× total damage (1.5× STAB × 2× type effectiveness). That guide is specific to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl; do not treat it as a complete account of every game’s full damage formula.

The 18-type chart is not universal across every Pokémon game. The official chart is based on the latest game in the series and warns that type affinity may differ by game. Its separate Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl guide covers 17 types, so that older, game-specific reference should not be confused with the current 18-type chart above.

- Dark and Steel were introduced in Generation II; Fairy was introduced in Generation VI.
- Generations II–V had no Fairy type. In those generations, Steel resisted Ghost- and Dark-type moves; from Generation VI, those moves deal neutral damage to Steel.
- In Generation I, Ghost-type moves had no effect on Psychic Pokémon. That interaction changed in Generation II.
- Generation I also had different Bug/Poison and Ice/Fire interactions.
If you are playing an older title, use a chart explicitly labeled for that generation rather than assuming every cell above applies.
