What did Bloomberg report about a Sony handheld?
On November 25, 2024, Bloomberg reporters Takashi Mochizuki and Debby Wu reported that Sony was in the early stages of developing a portable console that could play PS5 games away from a television. The report attributed the information to unnamed people familiar with the project, said a launch was likely years away, and noted Sony might decide not to release the device. Is Sony’s portable PS5 still in development?

Sony’s broader strategy offers context but not confirmation. Its 2024 Game & Network Services investor presentation discusses using peripherals to expand engagement, introduce new use cases, improve the experience, build loyalty, reach people who do not own a PS5, and extend PlayStation to new devices. Can PlayStation Portal play games without a PS5?
PlayStation Portal is available now, but it is a streaming accessory—not the standalone handheld described in Bloomberg’s report. For Remote Play, the game must be installed on a PS5, and Sony says users need a PS5 console, a PlayStation account, and Wi-Fi. Sony recommends an internet connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better experience and cautions that network conditions affect play quality. Sony also lists cloud streaming for selected games with a PlayStation Plus Premium membership. That includes selected catalog games and selected digital games in the user’s library; availability depends on time, region, country, and plan. The key distinction is local play versus streaming: Portal is documented as a remote-play device with an additional cloud-streaming option, while the device Bloomberg described has not been publicly specified well enough to say how its games would run. What Sony’s PlayStation figures do—and don’t—tell us
Sony reported 56 million cumulative PS5 sell-through units as of March 31, 2024; the figure includes PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. It also reported 49 million monthly active PS5 consoles as of April 30, 2024. Sony defines monthly active consoles as estimated unique PS5 and PS4 consoles used to play games or access PlayStation Network services, and says the estimate may be updated.
