The separate Portal with RTX is free for people who already own Portal; that offer does not make the base game free to acquire. Check the live listing for the price in your region.
Is the original Portal free to play?
Valve’s official Steam page for Portal provides purchase options for the base game. That is different from Steam’s free-to-play status: Steam defines free-to-play games as downloadable and playable without a subscription or credit-card requirement. A sale or temporary discount on a paid game does not, by itself, make it free-to-play.

The Steam page’s price and discount can vary by region and over time. The official listing checked on October 8, 2026, does not establish one price that applies everywhere or remains fixed, so use the live store page to see the amount currently shown for your account and region.
Why Portal with RTX can appear to be free
Portal with RTX is a separate version, not a change to the ownership terms for the original game. In a December 8, 2022 announcement, Valve said: “Portal with RTX is now available, and it’s free for anyone who owns Portal!” The condition is important: players need to own the base game to qualify. Valve’s Portal announcement archive contains that statement.

What you get in Portal
Portal is a single-player puzzle game. Valve’s store description says players solve physical puzzles and challenges by opening portals to move objects and themselves through space. The listing also includes achievements, captions, a level editor, Source SDK, commentary, and Remote Play features.

Could Portal have been free temporarily?
Steam discounts and limited-time promotions can change, and the title does not identify a region or offer period. The official listing and announcement archive checked on October 8, 2026, support the distinction between a purchasable base game and the RTX version’s owner-only free access; they do not establish that the base game is permanently free for everyone. The archive includes updates through June 27, 2025, but that is not proof that no short-lived promotion has ever taken place.
