POPULATION: ONE is worth trying if you want a VR battle royale built around climbing, gliding and throwing up quick cover—not simply aiming from behind a wall. Those movement mechanics are the game’s defining pitch, and the official site also describes squad play and crossplay. The Meta Quest listing currently offers a “Get” button but discloses in-game purchases. That does not make the VR headset itself free, and current matchmaking activity and mode availability are not established by the available listings.
What do you do in POPULATION: ONE?
The official tagline is “Climb. Fly. Build.” In practice, the advertised loop is to scale structures for a better position, glide to cover distance or approach opponents, and build quick cover during a fight. That gives the battle royale a vertical, movement-led identity: height and traversal are part of how you engage, rather than just ways to move between firefights. The official POPULATION: ONE site presents these as core mechanics, not evidence that every match is balanced or that the controls will suit every player.
The same site pitches squad interaction, including high-fives and fist bumps, and says crossplay is supported. Those features make it a social multiplayer proposition as well as a shooter. Check current platform and matchmaking details before relying on crossplay with a particular friend or setup.

As of October 8, 2026, the Meta Quest store listing shows a “Get” action and discloses in-game purchases. Meta’s March 9, 2023 free-to-play announcement described the Quest transition and additions including AI bots, matchmaking intended to group new and lower-skill players into similar-skill lobbies, and a store catalog with new skins at launch. That announcement is historical; it does not establish today’s mode rotation, store inventory, item prices or matchmaking performance.
The headset is a separate cost
A free-to-get game listing is not the full cost of entry if you do not already own compatible VR hardware. The Meta listing retrieved here names Meta Quest but does not provide a model-by-model compatibility matrix, so confirm that your headset is currently supported before buying hardware for this game.
