Life by You was canceled on June 17, 2024, less than a month after Paradox Interactive withdrew its planned June 4 Early Access date. The publisher said its reassessment found key areas still lacking and that a release it could confidently stand behind remained too far away and uncertain.
What happened to Life by You?
Paradox first delayed Life by You, then canceled it. On May 20, 2024, the publisher withdrew the game’s June 4 Early Access date and declined to announce a replacement. On June 17, it said it had decided not to release the game.

Why did Paradox cancel Life by You?
Paradox’s stated reason was that the game was not close enough to a version the company felt confident releasing. Deputy CEO Mattias Lilja said the publisher paused Early Access to take a wider look at the game. It found that important areas remained lacking and judged that reaching a satisfactory release would take too long, with too much uncertainty.
Lilja also said two earlier delays had delivered incremental improvements, but, in retrospect, may have led the team to focus on details instead of assessing the overall game. He described the decision as a failure to meet Paradox’s and the community’s expectations, while acknowledging that the project had promising qualities.

That is Paradox’s public explanation; the company did not identify one specific technical defect as the cause. Its CEO, Fredrik Wester, similarly said that a version Paradox would be satisfied with was too far away.
What was Life by You supposed to be?
Paradox introduced Life by You as an open-world life simulation for PC, developed by Paradox Tectonic. The announced concept emphasized customization and player control, including:

- Quests, creator tools and mod support.
These were features and plans described before cancellation, not features in a released game. The announcement named the Epic Games Store and Steam as planned digital storefronts; the cited announcements do not establish a physical or boxed edition.

Paradox canceled the planned release before Life by You entered Early Access. The official announcements establish the cancellation, but do not confirm whether a storefront listing remains available now. They also do not explain how pre-orders were handled or establish whether every buyer received a refund. Anyone who placed an order should check the retailer or payment provider they used for current account-specific information.
