“Proof of a Hero” is a theme associated with the Monster Hunter game series. Concert programs describe its heroic character and document an orchestral arrangement by Jacob Zeleny, but the available program credits spell the composer’s surname two different ways: “Kohda” and “Koda.”
What is “Proof of a Hero”?
Two concert programs identify “Proof of a Hero” as a theme from Monster Hunter: the University of Maryland Gamer Symphony Orchestra’s Spring 2018 program calls it a popular heroic theme, and the Untamed 2019 program labels it “Proof of a Hero (Monster Hunter).” These sources establish the series connection, but they do not establish when the piece first appeared, which game version it represents, or a definitive version of the music.

Who composed and arranged it?
The programs both credit Jacob Zeleny as arranger, while giving different spellings for the composer’s name. The University of Maryland program lists Masato Kohda; Untamed lists Masato Koda. Without an authoritative game or publisher credit to resolve the discrepancy, neither spelling should be presented as definitive. What does the concert arrangement sound like?
Joshua McNulty’s note in the Untamed program describes a rousing 6/8 theme carried by horns over duplet figures in the strings, followed by a contrasting, noble 4/4 theme. The note then points to a chromatic ascent associated with the final confrontation. This is a description of the concert arrangement in that program, not an official account of every game recording or arrangement. (Untamed, 2019 program)

Is there an official sheet-music edition?
A Scribd result lists an English horn score under the title, but it is user-uploaded. That listing does not establish that the score is authorized, accurate, or currently available for purchase. The concert-program credits likewise document a performance arrangement, not an official published edition. (Scribd listing for an English horn score labeled “PROOF OF A HERO from Monster Hunter”)
