Project 007 is now officially titled 007 First Light: a standalone James Bond origin story from IO Interactive, the studio behind the Hitman series. It follows a 26-year-old Royal Navy air crewman recruited into MI6 and its 00 program, with gameplay built around stealth, action, gadgets and improvisation. IO Interactive announced a May 27, 2026 release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC; because that date has passed, the announcement alone does not establish whether the game is now available on each platform or in every region.
What is 007 First Light?
007 First Light is a third-person, single-player action-adventure game developed and published by IO Interactive in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios. First announced under the working name Project 007, it is a standalone reimagining of James Bond’s beginnings—not an adaptation of a particular film or other previous Bond story. IO Interactive announced the project and its premise on June 4, 2025.
IO Interactive’s story begins with Bond at age 26, serving as a Royal Navy air crewman. His instincts and heroism bring him to the attention of MI6, where he enters the agency’s newly resurrected elite 00 section and begins the path toward becoming a full-fledged spy. The publisher describes an original global adventure involving allies, enemies and challenges that can be met with force, guile or charm.
IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak said in the June 4, 2025 announcement: “We’re pouring our energy and passion for the franchise into creating a cinematic adventure that pushes the boundaries of what a James Bond game can be, while telling a fresh, new story.”

How does the gameplay work?
The game’s stated design lets players approach objectives through stealth, direct action or a mixture of both. The December 2025 developer diary groups its systems into four pillars: Spycraft, Instinct, Gadgets and Combat. IO Interactive’s gameplay reveal and developer diary provide the official descriptions.
- Spycraft: Observe targets, infiltrate spaces and use information to create an advantage.
- Instinct: Bluff, deceive and stay focused under pressure.
- Gadgets: Use tools to create tactical options and adapt to changing situations.
- Combat: Engage in gunplay and close-quarters takedowns, and interact with the environment.
PlayStation’s gameplay coverage shows a covert operation at a chess tournament in Slovakia and an infiltration of a gala in Kensington, London. These are examples from the reveal, not a complete list of the game’s locations. The footage supports a mix of social infiltration and action, but the official descriptions do not specify every mission system or how much freedom each approach allows.

What platforms and release date were announced?
IO Interactive announced 007 First Light for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, with May 27, 2026 as the release date. PlayStation also lists May 27, 2026 for the PS5 version. The IO Interactive reveal retains an older March 27 date in one section, but its current headline and description give May 27, as does PlayStation’s listing.
May 27, 2026 is now in the past. The official pages cited here establish the announced date, but do not explicitly confirm that the game launched or that it is currently purchasable on every platform and in every region. Check the relevant platform’s current store listing for release status and availability before buying.

IO Interactive announced four editions, with the Legacy Edition adding the largest set of physical collectibles. Their described contents are announcement details, not confirmation of current stock or regional availability. The reveal’s prices and preorder terms are time- and region-sensitive, so check current store listings for those details rather than relying on launch-period information.

Is there a 007 First Light controller?
PlayStation lists a 007 First Light Limited Edition DualSense wireless controller. It is a PS5 accessory, not a requirement for playing the game; the cited listing does not establish its present availability. Does 007 First Light have multiplayer?
PlayStation describes the game as a single-player experience. Its FAQ says it has no information about multiplayer modes; that is not the same as a definitive statement that multiplayer is impossible. PlayStation’s FAQ is the cited source for that qualification.
