Project Century was the codename SEGA used when Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio revealed a new game concept at The Game Awards 2024. SEGA later confirmed its official title as STRANGER THAN HEAVEN. The game is now scheduled to launch on January 15, 2027.
What was Project Century?
Project Century was introduced as a brand-new concept from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the Like a Dragon franchise. SEGA did not describe it as a Like a Dragon sequel or confirm that it belongs to that franchise. The December 13, 2024 press announcement grouped the reveal with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and a new Virtua Fighter project. The attached SEGA Sammy notice is dated December 16, 2024.

Is Project Century now called STRANGER THAN HEAVEN?
Yes. In June 2025, SEGA confirmed STRANGER THAN HEAVEN as the official title of the game previously revealed as Project Century. Project Century remains useful when referring to the original reveal; later news and release information use STRANGER THAN HEAVEN. (SEGA’s title announcement)

What kind of game is STRANGER THAN HEAVEN?
SEGA’s May 2026 overview describes an action-adventure built around a story spanning 50 years, five eras and five cities. It highlights a flexible combat system and show-business mechanics in which the player takes the role of a showman. This broader description comes from later material, not just the 2024 reveal.
Five periods and places
The May 2026 presentation identified these settings: 1915 Kokura, 1929 Kure, 1943 Osaka, 1951 Atami and 1965 Shinjuku. The story begins in 1915 and follows protagonist Makoto Daito and his lifelong friend Yu Shinjo, according to Video Games Chronicle’s report on the presentation. Combat and music
VGC reports that combat uses separate controls for Makoto’s left and right limbs. The presentation also described a music mechanic in which players collect and arrange sounds from the environment. These specifics were reported in 2026 and should not be read as details established by the original codename reveal.
When does STRANGER THAN HEAVEN come out, and what platforms are listed?
SEGA announced a release date of January 15, 2027. Its June 8, 2026 announcement lists Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Steam and PlayStation 5. It also identifies a PS5 physical edition. (SEGA’s release and platform announcement)

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s September 25, 2026 Tokyo Game Show update reported a collaboration with Toei, a duet song performed by the actors playing Makoto Daito and Yu Shinjo, additional performers connected to the game’s show-business content, another voice actor and nationwide demo events. The January 15, 2027 date remains the release date in SEGA’s announcement cited above. For changes after September 2026, check the studio’s latest updates.
