PlayStation 5 Pro’s major 2026 graphics upgrade is an updated version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s AI-powered image upscaler. Sony announced it on February 27 and began rolling out broad support through a PS5 system software update on March 16, 2026. It is now available in supported games, but the benefit—and whether a game supports it—varies by title.

What the PS5 Pro graphics upgrade changes

PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and reconstructs them at a higher effective resolution. Sony says the 2026 version uses a different approach to both the neural network and the overall algorithm. The updated implementation was developed with AMD through Project Amethyst, then refined for PS5 Pro.

Sony describes the intended results as more stable images, more precise reconstruction, and clearer fine detail. Those are descriptions from Sony, not a guarantee of a visible improvement in every game or a measured performance result. Developers can balance image quality and performance in their implementations, and Sony says outcomes vary by title.

At the February announcement, Sony said PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles. That figure refers to titles using PSSR at the time; it is not a count of games already updated to the newer version.

When the upgrade arrived

  • February 27, 2026: Sony announced upgraded PSSR, said the global rollout would follow in the coming weeks, and named Resident Evil Requiem as the first title using it.
  • March 16, 2026: Sony said a PS5 system software update introducing broad support began rolling out in phases at 10:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

Sony’s March 16 post named support in games including Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill f, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Sony said Crimson Desert would use upgraded PSSR at its March 19 launch, and announced upcoming patches for Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077. An announced patch is not the same as a released update, so check the game’s current patch notes for its status.

How to try upgraded PSSR on PS5 Pro

Sony announced an optional setting called “Enhance PSSR Image Quality.” It lets players try the improved version in PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. The setting does not add support to games that lack it, and Sony warns that the enhancement can produce unexpected visual effects in some cases.

  1. Install the latest available PS5 system software update.
  2. On the PS5 Pro, open Settings and look for Screen and Video, then the PSSR image-quality enhancement setting. Sony’s announcement names the option, but the available documentation does not establish a current menu path across software versions.
  3. Enable “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” and launch a game that supports PSSR. If the image looks worse or shows unexpected effects, disable the option.

What to expect from the upgrade

Upgraded PSSR is a rendering feature, not a promise of higher frame rates across the PS5 Pro library. Its main aim is image reconstruction: clearer fine details and improved stability in games that implement it. The practical result depends on the title, its graphics modes, and its patch.

For example, Capcom’s Masaru Ijuin said the upgraded version helped Resident Evil Requiem process intricate textures that are traditionally difficult to upscale. Remedy’s Tatu Aalto described the change more generally as an improvement to upscaling quality and stability. These developer comments describe their experience with the technology; they are not a controlled comparison across games.

Does upgraded PSSR mean you need to buy a PS5 Pro?

No. The feature is for PS5 Pro, but an existing owner should first check whether a game they play supports the upgraded version and whether its visual result is worthwhile. Sony’s 2024 launch announcement listed the Pro with a 2TB SSD and DualSense controller, and stated that it had 67% more GPU Compute Units, memory 28% faster, and could render gameplay up to 45% faster than the then-current PS5. Those are Sony’s launch comparisons, not independent test results or current product pricing. Sony’s PS5 Pro launch release has the original specifications.
