There is no official, series-wide ranking of the best Bug-type Pokémon. This editorial countdown weighs battle utility, distinctive typing and abilities, and lasting appeal across the franchise; it is not a claim that these Pokémon perform equally well in every game or competitive format. Competitive examples are labeled with their format and date where the available evidence supports them.
How this ranking works
A high base-stat total alone does not establish that a Pokémon is effective in a particular game. This list instead considers three things: what a Pokémon can do in battle, whether its typing or abilities create a distinctive role, and how memorable it is across the series. The first two are game-dependent; broad appeal is an editorial judgment, not a popularity statistic.

The available evidence supports several candidates and specific roles, but does not establish a definitive order for ten Pokémon. The entries below are therefore a deliberately qualified selection: the evidence is strongest for Scizor, Volcarona, and Heracross, while other positions reflect the stated editorial criteria rather than a verified competitive tier list.
The 10 best non-Legendary Bug-type Pokémon
1. Scizor
Scizor’s Bug/Steel typing and its listed abilities, Technician and Swarm, give it a clear identity. The official Pokédex confirms those traits, while competitive discussion of Bug teams gives context for Scizor’s potential team role; neither source makes it universally dominant across games or formats. 2. Volcarona
Volcarona is Bug/Fire, a distinctive pairing that sets it apart among Bug-types. A 2018 Smogon Bug-monotype analysis discusses setup opportunities for Volcarona in that metagame. That is useful evidence of a role in a particular historical format, not a current verdict across all competitive play. Pokémon’s Volcarona Pokédex entry; Smogon’s Bug-monotype analysis.
3. Heracross
Heracross earns a place for a concrete team function as well as its lasting presence in the series. In a 2018 Smogon analysis of Bug monotype, Heracross is described as a revenge killer that can help clean late in a game. That finding is specific to the analysis’s metagame and should not be read as a universal ranking or a current-format guarantee. Smogon’s Bug-monotype analysis.

- Pokémon Center Original
4. Galvantula
Galvantula’s official Bug/Electric typing makes it a distinct choice for a list built partly around unusual type combinations. The Pokédex confirms its identity, but the available evidence here does not establish a current competitive role or justify placing it above other candidates on battle performance alone. Pokémon’s Galvantula Pokédex entry.
5. Buzzwole
Buzzwole is a candidate for readers interested in competitive team roles: the 2018 Smogon Bug-monotype analysis groups it with Heracross as a revenge killer that can also clean late-game. This is historical, format-specific analysis, not evidence that Buzzwole holds the same place in every game or metagame. Its inclusion here reflects that documented role, not a universal claim of superiority. Smogon’s Bug-monotype analysis.
Rank #3
- The Joltik Sitting Cuties Plush is weighted with microbeads, so it sits up when you put it on a flat surface. This palm-sized plush is a fun, charming way to show off a favorite Bug- and Electric-type Pokémon originally discovered in Unova!Measures about 3 inches tall and 4 inches wide
- Sits up easily on a desk, shelf, or other flat surface
- Care Instructions: Hand Wash Only. Line Dry.
- Item Dimensions: 4.1 x 3.9 x 3 inches (10.4 x 9.9 x 7.6 cm)
- Pokémon Center Original
6. Pinsir
Pinsir is a long-running Bug-type candidate whose appeal is easy to understand for players who value a straightforward, recognizable design. The evidence available for this ranking does not provide a named format analysis that would support a precise competitive placement, so this position is an editorial nod to series appeal rather than a claim about current battle strength.
7. Butterfree
Butterfree represents one of the series’ most familiar early Bug-types. Its place here is based on franchise recognition and the role it plays in the experience of encountering Bug Pokémon early in the games—not on a verified competitive ranking. A player optimizing for a particular format may reach a different conclusion.
Rank #4
- The Volcarona Sitting Cuties Plush is weighted with microbeads, so it sits up when you put it on a flat surface. This palm-sized plush is a fun, charming way to show off a favorite Bug- and Fire-type Pokémon originally discovered in Unova!
- Sits up easily on a desk, shelf, or other flat surface
- Care Instructions: Hand Wash Only. Line Dry.
- Item Dimensions: 3.2 x 8.1 x 5.7 inches (8.1 x 20.5 x 14.4 cm)
- Pokémon Center Original
8. Ninjask
Ninjask is a distinctive pick for fans of specialized battle roles and memorable designs. The sources available for this piece do not establish a current format-specific case for its position, so it should be read as a series-wide editorial choice rather than a recommendation for a particular competitive team.
9. Ribombee
Ribombee adds a more recent-feeling, visually distinctive option to a list otherwise anchored by established names. Its placement is based on broad appeal and variety within the Bug-type roster; the evidence cited here does not support a claim about its current competitive standing.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the order can change by game or format
Competitive rankings depend on the rules and metagame being discussed. The cited Smogon material is a 2018 Bug-monotype analysis: it supports the roles described for Heracross, Buzzwole, and Volcarona in that historical context, but cannot by itself establish their standing today or in other formats. Meanwhile, official Pokédex entries verify typing and listed abilities, not comparative performance.
If your priority is a particular game, format, or team-building question, use a ranking built for that environment rather than treating this series-wide editorial list as a battle-ready tier list. The official Pokédex is a primary reference for Pokémon identity, types, and listed traits.
