Published tests show capable results in some native Mac games, Windows titles run through CrossOver, and selected console emulators. Those are different software paths, and performance varies by game, settings, and configuration. The M4 Pro is a faster, distinct model—not the configuration behind the base M4 results.
What hardware does the base M4 Mac mini have?
Apple’s 2024 base Mac mini pairs an M4 chip with a 10-core CPU—four performance cores and six efficiency cores—and a 10-core GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing. It has 120GB/s memory bandwidth, 16GB of unified memory, and a 256GB SSD. Apple offers higher memory and storage configurations. Apple’s specifications also list Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, HDMI, front USB-C ports, a headphone jack, and three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports on the M4 model.
The M4 Pro is a separate configuration: its base specification has a 12-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB of unified memory, and 512GB SSD, with three rear Thunderbolt 5 ports. Keep that distinction in mind when comparing gaming results; figures for M4 Pro do not describe the base model.
How well does the base M4 Mac mini run games?
Published results indicate that the base M4 can deliver playable performance in several tested games, but they are not a promise for every title. Tom’s Guide reports the following 1080p benchmark averages for M4 and M4 Pro systems:
#1 Best Overall

| Game | Base M4 | M4 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider | 40 fps | 83 fps |
| Civilization VI: Gathering Storm | 52.48 fps | 89.31 fps |
| Borderlands 3 | 25.10 fps | 44.62 fps |
| Total War: Warhammer III | 24.6 fps | 46.1 fps |
These are Tom’s Guide’s reported results, not a controlled comparison with other publications’ tests. The gap between configurations is substantial in these examples, and the base M4 results also show why “gaming performance” cannot be reduced to one frame-rate figure: game demands differ. Tom’s Guide’s review says its Mac-compatible Steam library skewed toward older games and notes that people seeking the latest releases at high frame rates may be better served by a gaming PC.
A separate report from Notebookcheck, summarizing ETA Prime’s November 2024 tests, gives additional examples on the base M4: Hades 2 averaged 120 fps at 1080p/high, Shadow of the Tomb Raider averaged 49 fps at 1080p/medium, and Metro Exodus averaged 68 fps at 1080p/medium. These results belong to that test, not Tom’s Guide’s, so differences between them should not be treated as a direct benchmark comparison.

What changes when running Windows games through CrossOver?
CrossOver is a compatibility-software route for running some Windows games on macOS; it is not the same as playing a native Mac version. In ETA Prime’s testing as reported by Notebookcheck, Spider-Man Remastered averaged 88 fps at 1080p/medium with IGTI upscaling, Elden Ring ran around 50 fps at 900p/medium, and Cyberpunk 2077 averaged about 73 fps at 1080p/low with AMD FSR 3 and frame generation.
Those methods and settings matter. In particular, the Cyberpunk result includes upscaling and frame generation, while the Spider-Man result includes IGTI upscaling. Do not read the figures as native macOS performance or assume the same experience across CrossOver versions, games, or settings. Notebookcheck’s report was published November 12 and updated November 13, 2024; it summarizes the named tests rather than establishing current compatibility for every Windows game. How is game emulation on the M4 Mac mini?
In the same November 2024 report on ETA Prime’s testing, RPCS3 ran Skate 3 at around 60 fps and God of War 3 at around 50 fps, both at 720p using Vulkan. These are individual PS3-game results; they do not establish compatibility or performance across the PS3 catalog.
Emulation results depend on the emulator, game, graphics backend, operating system, and configuration. A November 2024 Retro Game Corps video description lists ES-DE, RetroArch, Dolphin, PCSX2, PPSSPP, Lime3DS, Cemu, RPCS3, and Xemu among the tools featured. That list establishes that the tools were covered, not that every listed emulator—or every game within one—worked perfectly. See the Retro Game Corps video. Neither demonstrations nor a handful of benchmarks function as a current, comprehensive compatibility database. Emulator availability also does not grant rights to game files; use only game files you are legally entitled to use.

What should you consider before buying it for games?
- Game support: Check whether the titles you actually want have native Mac releases, can run through compatibility software, or are supported by an emulator. Treat each route as a separate compatibility question.
- Your performance target: Resolution, graphics quality, frame rate, upscaling, and frame generation all affect results. A reported figure only applies to its named game and test conditions.
- Which configuration: Base M4 and M4 Pro results are not interchangeable. Choose based on the games and performance expectations that matter to you.
- Storage and setup: The base model’s 256GB SSD may be a constraint for a large game library. Apple sells the Mac mini as a desktop and lists the computer and power lead in the package; plan separately for a display and input devices. An external SSD is one possible way to add library space, though no particular drive is established here as tested or recommended.
- Input-device compatibility: Tom’s Guide reported issues with several PC game controllers during its testing and used a trackball and keyboard for BioShock Remastered. That experience does not support a blanket recommendation for any specific controller; verify compatibility for the device and games you plan to use.
Verdict: Is the base M4 Mac mini a good gaming and emulation machine?
It can be a capable compact desktop for a player whose games fit its native Mac, CrossOver, or emulation options and whose expectations match the tested performance. It is a less certain choice if you want broad access to new PC releases, consistently high frame rates, or guaranteed emulator compatibility. Check support title by title, distinguish base M4 results from M4 Pro results, and account for the display, controls, and library storage your setup will need.
