Square Enix ended FINAL FANTASY XI service on PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 on March 31, 2016. Its Windows version continued. This was a shutdown of one game’s console service—not the closure of a single, universal PlayStation 2 online network.
What shut down on March 31, 2016?
Square Enix announced that service for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versions of FINAL FANTASY XI would end Thursday, March 31, 2016, at 7:00 a.m. PDT. The notice also said PlayOnline Viewer access through PS2 would end. Square Enix’s service notice is the primary record of the shutdown.
The notice was about the console versions of FINAL FANTASY XI. It did not announce that Sony was switching off one central server for every PS2 game or ending all PS2 online play at once. The PS2 online landscape consisted of separate, game-specific services, as described in this history of PS2 online play.
Could players continue playing FINAL FANTASY XI?
Yes. Square Enix directed players who wanted to continue their adventures to the Windows version with a SQUARE ENIX account. Its official notice put it this way: “Those wishing to continue their adventures in Vana’diel may do so via the Windows version on their SQUARE ENIX account.” The migration notice likewise stated that console service would be unavailable after the shutdown date while the service contract remained in effect.

What happened to data stored on the PS2?
Square Enix warned that FINAL FANTASY XI data stored on the console would no longer be accessible after service ended, and advised players to transfer it beforehand. This warning concerned locally stored console data; it is distinct from the continued availability of the Windows service.
Was this really a 16-year shutdown?
The 2016 end date is documented, but the official notices reviewed do not establish the service’s start date or verify an exact 16-year operating span. Square Enix’s official anniversary history is additional company material, but the shutdown claim should be stated with the confirmed date rather than treating “16 years” as a verified duration.

Was FINAL FANTASY XI the last PS2 online service?
Contemporary reporting described FINAL FANTASY XI and PlayStation Broadband Navigator as the last two PS2 services ending on March 31, 2016. That description is a secondary report, not evidence of a shared PS2-wide server or proof that every online feature across every title ended then. The report should be read in that limited context.

The original FINAL FANTASY XI PS2 edition is now a historical release, not a way to restore official online play on the console. The documented continuation was the Windows service; Square Enix’s notice does not say the PS2 edition can reconnect to it.
