One Black attendant prompted joyful reactions from some fans, including a personal response described by Black Girl Gamers. The examples reported are heartwarming, but they are anecdotes—not evidence of a consensus among players.
Who fans mean by “Nurse Joy”
“Nurse Joy” is familiar shorthand for the attendants who heal Pokémon, but it is not the most precise name for this game character. GameSpot notes that Nurse Joy is principally an anime character identity; the games generally refer to the workers as Pokémon Center staff or clerks. In Legends: Z-A, “Black Pokémon Center attendant” describes the character without implying that the game officially names her Nurse Joy.

What changes about the Pokémon Center staff
GameSpot’s October 16, 2025 report says the attendants in Legends: Z-A share a hairstyle inspired by the anime character’s distinctive loops, while differing in their appearances, including skin tone and facial features. The report also describes them as having individual identities, a departure from the repeated staff designs familiar from earlier games.
The Pokémon Company’s official character page lists named Lumiose City characters, but does not visibly identify these attendants. No official explanation for the design choice is established by the sources cited here, so claims about the developers’ intentions would be speculation.

Why some of the reaction felt personal
In a January 15, 2026 feature, Black Girl Gamers covered a video by Jahara Jayde reacting to the character. Jayde says her “childhood self feels so happy,” then corrects herself to say her adult self is happy too. The feature frames the moment as validating: seeing a Black character in a prominent, familiar Pokémon role can matter to players who have rarely seen themselves represented that way.
That response is one person’s experience, not a measure of how every Black player—or the player base overall—feels. It does, however, show why the character’s appearance resonated beyond a discussion of visual design.

The online response included praise and criticism
Know Your Meme’s October 2025 entry documents enthusiastic posts, fan art and cosplay, alongside critical reactions to the image and discussion over what to call the character. The Reddit thread “Black Nurse Joy Confirmed!!!” likewise includes praise, objections to aspects of the design and debate about the Nurse Joy name.
Know Your Meme reported that the post attributed to the leak account @CentroLeaks_alt had more than 9,100 likes and 3 million views in three days, and that a repost by @UniteVids had more than 22,000 likes in the same span. Those are engagement figures reported by a secondary source for particular posts—not a poll, an independently audited count or proof that most players shared any one reaction. “Mostly heartwarming” fits the positive examples highlighted in coverage, but should be read as a description of those examples, not a quantified verdict on the fandom.
