For most PS4 games, yes: online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus. That has been the rule since the console launched, not a recent change. Some games—especially many free-to-play titles—are exceptions, so check the specific game’s PlayStation Store listing before assuming online play is free.
Do you need PlayStation Plus for every PS4 online game?
No. PlayStation says most PS4 games require a Plus subscription for online multiplayer, but some do not. Its support guidance recommends checking the individual game’s PlayStation Store listing to confirm the requirement: PlayStation Plus support.
Many free-to-play games are among the exceptions. PlayStation’s U.S. membership page names Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone as examples that do not require Plus for online play. The exception is not a guarantee for every free-to-play game or every mode, so verify the game you want to play on its Store listing: PlayStation Plus membership plans and benefits.
Was PS4 multiplayer ever free?
PS4 online multiplayer was generally a PlayStation Plus benefit from the console’s launch. In its October 30, 2013 European PS4 FAQ, Sony answered that Plus membership was needed for PS4 online multiplayer. The same FAQ contrasted PS4 with PS3, where PlayStation Network multiplayer was free, and noted that some free-to-play PS4 titles might allow multiplayer without Plus: PlayStation 4: The ultimate FAQ – Europe.

- "Suspend mode" eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button.
- Enables the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a platform that is tuned specifically to their needs.
- Engage in endless personal challenges between you and your community, and share your epic moments for the world to see.
- Gamers can share their epic triumphs by hitting the "SHARE button" on the controller, scan through the last few minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game.
That history explains why “no longer free” can be misleading: the policy was not newly introduced after years of free PS4 multiplayer. The current rule remains that most games require a subscription, with exceptions.
Can another account on your PS4 play online through your membership?
Sony documents sharing selected PlayStation Plus benefits with other accounts on a member’s primary PS4. Its launch FAQ also said other accounts could use online multiplayer on a PS4 designated as the Plus member’s primary console. For current sharing details and eligibility, consult Sony’s PlayStation Plus support page.
