Its appeal is the connection between those activities and Arls’s development—not crafting as an isolated side system. The available official descriptions establish that structure, but not how well its pacing, combat, or time pressure work in practice, so this review focuses on what the game is and what prospective players can reliably expect.
What is Atelier Meruru Plus?
Atelier Meruru is the third game in the Arland branch of the Atelier series. Meruru is the princess of Arls, a small frontier kingdom, and the central objective is to help the country advance. The “Plus” title refers to the PlayStation Vita edition; it should not be confused with the original PlayStation 3 release or the later DX editions.

The official Nintendo description of the Switch DX edition summarizes the core premise: “Use Synthesis, Explore, and Battle to increase the population within the time limit and boost the advancement of the kingdom.” That is a useful statement of the game’s design, though it describes the DX edition rather than documenting every detail of the Vita Plus version.
How the kingdom-growth loop works
Alchemy, exploration, and battles serve the same goal
The game links its principal activities to Arls’s progress. Synthesis creates items, while exploration and battles supply the materials and opportunities associated with that broader effort. The official descriptions frame these systems as means of advancing the kingdom rather than unrelated activities.
#1 Best Overall
- As players work hard to build Westwald up from a quaint village to a flourishing city, they will require the aid of the many alchemists that settle in the town.
- Features famous alchemists from previous entries across the Atelier series, including those from the Salburg, Arland, Dusk, and Mysterious trilogies.
- Celebrates the series' 20th anniversary; allowing players to experience the beloved series' characters with an exciting new town-building focus.
Requests turn progress into development
Residents make requests, and fulfilling them can earn development points. Those points support kingdom growth and the construction of new facilities. In practical terms, the loop asks the player to connect what they gather and make with what the settlement needs.
Time is part of the premise
The official description says population growth and kingdom advancement happen within a time limit. That establishes planning as a part of the design, but the available evidence does not establish how strict the limit feels, how forgiving the game is, or whether it makes the pace satisfying. Those are points that require direct play or reliable review evidence rather than inference from the store description.
Can you start with Meruru?
Yes, according to NIS America’s launch-era guidance. In a PlayStation.Blog post dated April 19, 2012, NIS America Marketing Coordinator Ryan Phillips described Atelier Meruru as the final game in the Arland trilogy while saying its story was independent of the previous two and could be enjoyed without prior knowledge. Earlier games may provide character and series context, but the publisher did not present them as prerequisites for following Meruru’s story.

| Edition | Platform and release context | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Atelier Meruru (original) | PlayStation 3; North American launch context in 2012 | PlayStation.Blog announced May 22, 2012 for North America. An NIS America press release separately gave a May 29, 2012 U.S. ship date. These describe different events and should not be treated as conflicting dates for the same event. |
| Atelier Meruru Plus | PlayStation Vita; Japan release reported as March 20, 2013 | The date is identified in a secondary encyclopedia result, not a directly verified official Vita source in the available material. A complete official account of Plus-specific additions is not established. |
| Atelier Meruru ~The Apprentice of Arland~ DX | Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4; December 4, 2018 | Official Nintendo and PlayStation Store listings verify the DX edition and its release date. The PlayStation Store listing also says it is playable on PS5, with some PS4 features possibly absent. |
The Plus edition is the version named in this review, but the available official sources do not provide a dependable, exhaustive Plus-versus-original comparison. It would be misleading to list a definitive set of Plus additions or assume that every feature documented for DX is present in Plus. For present-day platform details, the verified modern-store options in these sources are the Switch and PS4 DX editions, not the Vita Plus version.

Release history and series context
NIS America’s 2012 launch post presented the PS3 game as the concluding entry in the Arland trilogy and announced a May 22 North American launch. A separate NIS America press release lists May 29, 2012 as the U.S. ship date and identifies PlayStation 3 as the platform. Later, the DX edition arrived on Switch and PS4 on December 4, 2018. These releases are related editions of the same game, not interchangeable labels for the Vita Plus version.
What this evidence can—and cannot—say about the game
The official material makes the premise and progression structure clear: fulfill requests, earn development points, and use synthesis, exploration, and battles in service of Arls’s growth. It does not establish whether the combat is engaging, the time limit is balanced, the progression is repetitive, or the game performs well on a particular platform. Those judgments would require firsthand play or dependable review evidence. This distinction matters especially when the edition being discussed is Plus, since the strongest available official storefront details describe DX rather than a complete Vita edition feature set.
