Rosa Ruthard’s book quest is easy to miss: accept her request during Taking French Leave, collect A Book of Humorous Anecdotes at Maleshov, then return to her before advancing into the council sequence. The writing scene also feeds into the later romance route, which continues through Dancing with the Devil and Oratores.
Who is Rosa Ruthard?
Rosa is a noblewoman from Kuttenberg and the daughter of Sir Kunzlin Ruthard. Henry encounters her around Ruthard Palace. Her story is tied to the main quest Taking French Leave, when she shares information about a secret passage to Maleshov and asks Henry to retrieve a book.

Rosa is an NPC who can teach Henry skills; she is not a controllable companion. The guides describing her route treat her as a romance character, but do not support claims of permanent party membership, repeatable dates, or romance-related combat bonuses.
How to complete Rosa’s Book
- Accept the request during Taking French Leave. Speak with Rosa and agree to retrieve her book. This starts the optional task Rosa’s Book.
- Find the book at Maleshov Fortress. During the Maleshov visit, search the tower and Lady Ofka’s room. The item, A Book of Humorous Anecdotes, is reported beside the window. Collect it before leaving the fortress; one walkthrough warns that leaving without it fails the task objective.
- Return to Rosa promptly after the Maleshov sequence. After rescuing Hans, go back to Rosa before advancing into the council sequence. A guide warns that the collaborative writing scene can become unavailable if you progress too far, even when the item task remains in the journal.
- Start the writing collaboration. If the dialogue option is available, tell Rosa you have read the book, then agree to work on the story together. Guides report that several story branches can complete the task; there is no single required set of story choices.
- Finish the scene and respond supportively. Read through the completed story. If you want to signal direct romantic interest, choose the response that says Henry would like to get to know Rosa better. Exact dialogue wording can vary between guides, so look for the matching intent rather than relying on identical text.
Which writing choices should you pick?
The story dialogue changes its heroine, premise, and details. The task can be completed with different branches. For a reputation-friendly approach that flatters Rosa, guides recommend a woman protagonist, making her courageous, and saying Rosa is standing right in front of Henry. Treat these as recommended dialogue choices, not mandatory quest requirements.

Guide transcriptions differ on some later lines. If the precise wording in your game does not match a walkthrough, prioritize the supportive response and the option expressing interest in Rosa.

When Rosa is inside the tower, do not support the plan to burn it if you want to preserve the rescue route. Choose the path that saves her.

Help Rosa across the flooded passage and choose the kiss when the scene offers it. Guides list earlier progress in the writing scene, positive reputation, and the tower decision as possible factors if the kiss option does not appear; they do not establish one definitive cause for every missing prompt.
