Sega’s classic-games delisting was a historical sales cutoff, not a shutdown of games already in players’ libraries. Sega set the cutoff for new purchases at December 6, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. PST. Its Support FAQ, updated November 5, 2025, says existing owners can still download and play the games they own.
What happened to Sega’s classic games?
Sega ended new sales of a group of classic games and collections across several digital storefronts on December 6, 2024. The cutoff covered different titles on different platforms; it was not one identical catalog-wide removal on every store. Sega’s SEGA CLASSICS FAQ provides platform-specific lists and says the date and time applied to the affected sales.
The notices do not state why Sega removed the titles. They also do not establish that a replacement collection was the reason.
Which platforms and games were affected?
Sega’s FAQ groups the affected items by platform. These are the categories and examples it identifies; the FAQ contains the full Steam list.
#1 Best Overall
- The iconic SEGA Genesis console that defined a generation of gaming returns in a slick, miniaturized unit.
- The SEGA Genesis Mini console is loaded with 42 legendary games and is plug and play ready right out of the box!

| Platform | Items identified by Sega |
|---|---|
| Steam | Mega Drive and Genesis Classic Bundle, Dreamcast Collection Bundle, and individual games including Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, NiGHTS into Dreams, Streets of Rage titles, Sonic 3D Blast, and Virtua Fighter 2. |
| Xbox | Altered Beast, Crazy Taxi, SEGA Genesis Classics, Golden Axe, Monster World, NiGHTS into Dreams, SEGA Bass Fishing, Shinobi, Sonic the Fighters, Streets of Rage, SVC: ToeJam & Earl, and Virtua Fighter 2. |
| Nintendo Switch | SEGA Genesis Classics. |
| PlayStation | SEGA Genesis Classics. |
Sega also published a separate Japanese notice about Xbox 360 sales ending, and said some Steam classic titles would stop selling on the same date. For the consolidated platform lists above, Sega’s English-language FAQ is the clearest reference.
Can existing owners still download and play the games?
Yes. Sega Support says: “All SEGA Classics games and bundles you own will remain in your library, ready to be downloaded and played at any time.” The statement applies to titles already owned; the delisting ended new purchases rather than removing those purchases from owners’ libraries. Sega’s Steam notice likewise says existing owners keep the games in their Steam libraries and can download and play them.

Can Nintendo Switch Online subscribers still play any of them?
Sega says select individual classic titles remain playable for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. The FAQ does not say that the entire delisted catalog is included, so a subscription should not be taken as access to every affected game.

What the delisting notices do not establish
- Sega’s reason: the official notices do not explain why the games were delisted.
- A complete replacement: the notices do not confirm that another collection replaces the full range of affected games.
- Every current store listing: the FAQ records the affected categories and cutoff, but does not establish the current storefront status of every individual SKU.
