Try Immersive Mode if you want Japanese and Portuguese characters to speak their respective languages and don’t mind reading subtitles while you play. If subtitles are hard to follow during combat or movement, choose a spoken language you understand without reading. You can switch the setting during your playthrough, so you do not have to commit to it from the start.
What Immersive Mode changes
Immersive Mode assigns voices by character: Japanese characters speak Japanese, and Portuguese characters speak Portuguese. Subtitles appear in the language you select. Xbox Wire describes it as having characters speak their native language with subtitles; PC Gamer’s explanation of Immersive Mode also distinguishes it from setting Japanese as the global voice language, which would make Portuguese characters speak Japanese too.

This is a voice-presentation setting, not a change to difficulty, stealth, combat, or story choices. Canon Mode is separate: it automates narrative decisions so the story follows the canon path, as Xbox Wire’s overview of Assassin’s Creed Shadows explains.
Choose based on how you play
| Choose Immersive Mode if… | Choose another spoken-language setting if… |
|---|---|
| You want to hear Japanese and Portuguese dialogue according to the characters speaking. | You want dialogue delivered in a language you understand without relying on subtitles. |
| You can comfortably read subtitles while exploring, traversing, and fighting. | You often miss subtitle lines when action is happening on screen. |
The subtitle tradeoff is practical, not universal: PC Gamer’s guide describes its writer having trouble keeping up with subtitles during gameplay. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee that every player will have the same difficulty.

How to try it and switch back
You can change Immersive Mode during a playthrough in the game’s Audio settings. PC Gamer reports that a quick reload is needed for the change to take effect, so reload after switching if the new voice presentation does not apply immediately. Trying it for a while, then returning to your previous setting if subtitles interrupt your play, is a low-commitment way to decide.

Ubisoft’s Accessibility Spotlight lists subtitle color customization and speaker directions, gameplay captions, a conversation log, HUD text resizing and backgrounds, and separate audio controls. These options may make text and audio cues easier to follow, but Ubisoft does not say they remove the need to read subtitles in Immersive Mode. Its Tech Q&A is another official source on the game’s technical and accessibility features.
