If you’re buying in the US today, Switch 2 is the forward-looking choice if you want its newer-system games and features and are comfortable with its $499.99 MSRP before tax. The original Switch—including Switch OLED—can still make sense if it costs substantially less where you live and its games are what you want. Switch 2 is already a current system, not a pre-order; compare the price you’ll actually pay and check compatibility for any essential Switch games.
Switch or Switch 2: the short version
- Choose Switch 2 if you want its newer-system software and features, plan to play games released for it, or want a newer console that also supports many original Switch games.
- Choose an original Switch or Switch OLED if you find a meaningfully lower local price and the games you care about are available on that system.
- Don’t buy on the assumption that every Switch game works perfectly on Switch 2. Nintendo says some games may not be supported or fully compatible; check its compatibility list for your must-play titles before buying.
The title’s “pre-order” question is out of date: Nintendo presents Switch 2 as a current product. The decision now is whether to buy it at the current price or save money with an original Switch.

What does Switch 2 cost now?
In the US, Nintendo’s manufacturer’s suggested retail price for Switch 2 rose from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. Nintendo states that US prices exclude tax. That is an MSRP, not a promise about a retailer’s checkout price: local stock, sales, bundles, and prices can differ. Check the price in your region before deciding. Nintendo’s Switch 2 product hub presents the console as a current system, while Nintendo’s price notice gives the US price schedule.
There is no single current price comparison for an original Switch or Switch OLED established here. Compare new, used, and refurbished listings where you live, and weigh the full checkout price against the games you intend to play. An older model is a value choice only if the savings are substantial enough to matter to you.

How much of your Switch library carries over?
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Some original titles have free updates or paid upgrades, but compatibility is not universal. Nintendo Support puts it this way: “The Nintendo Switch 2 system’s hardware is different from Nintendo Switch, and some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” See Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information and look up each game you consider essential before purchasing.
That makes backward compatibility a useful bridge, not a guarantee. If your decision depends on a particular game, verify both that it runs and whether any update or upgrade is relevant to the way you want to play it.

Will your old controllers, dock, and storage work?
- Original Joy-Con: can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but cannot attach to the Switch 2 body.
- Original Switch Pro Controller: can pair wirelessly.
- Original Switch dock: is not compatible with Switch 2.
- Conventional microSD cards: are not for Switch 2 game storage.
So an existing controller may still be useful, but don’t assume your old setup transfers intact. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility and accessory guidance explains the differences, including the distinction between ordinary microSD cards and storage intended for Switch 2 games.
Are new games still coming to the original Switch?
Nintendo’s February 2026 presentation described continued first-party releases for the original Switch, alongside Switch 2 first-party games planned for 2026 and beyond. It also said the cited Switch games can be played on Switch 2, while noting that some software has limitations. These are plans described in a dated presentation, not a guarantee that every schedule will remain unchanged. Use the specific games you want—not an assumption that either console’s library is finished or that every release is shared—as your guide. Nintendo’s February 2026 presentation documents the plans.

How to decide for your situation
Get Switch 2 if the newer system is the point
It is the clearer choice if you want Switch 2 games and features, and its current US MSRP fits your budget. Its support for many Switch games can also help you carry part of an existing library forward—but verify important titles individually.
Get a Switch or Switch OLED if the savings are real
An original system can be the sensible buy if it is substantially cheaper where you live and the games you want meet your needs on that platform. If you expect to upgrade later, factor in that not every game or accessory carries over in the same way.
Already own a Switch?
Decide based on what you would gain: Switch 2 software and features, plus compatibility with many—but not all—Switch games. Check your essential titles and accessory needs before treating your current library or controllers as a reason to upgrade.
