Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion that makes a returning player earn back their confidence. In The Verge-attributed review syndicated by Headtopics on June 18, 2024, the opening journey through the Realm of Shadow turns familiar habits into liabilities: ambushes and groups of enemies punish rushing, while patient exploration brings back the rhythm and pleasure of Elden Ring.
What kind of return does Shadow of the Erdtree offer?
The review presents the expansion less as a comfortable continuation than a reintroduction. A player who has already overcome difficult base-game bosses may arrive feeling seasoned, but that confidence does not make the Realm of Shadow predictable. Early encounters in Belurat, Tower Settlement, quickly remind the reviewer that recognizing the game’s conventions is not the same as being safe.
That reset is the point: the reviewer describes the experience as demanding, but not unfair. Over time, the pressure restores a more deliberate pace—one built around looking carefully, learning threats, and choosing when to engage.
How does the opening area make that case?
Belurat punishes careless exploration
The reviewer recounts being ambushed and overwhelmed by groups of enemies after initial success against weaker foes created a false sense of security. The difficulty comes not only from a single powerful opponent but from exploring without enough caution. The review’s account is personal, not a universal measure of how hard the expansion will feel to every player.

Its dungeon rewards attention
Belurat is described as a labyrinthine legacy dungeon, with hidden approaches and visually distinctive environments. Its appeal in the review is bound up with exploration: progress means noticing routes and surroundings rather than simply pushing forward. That discovery gives the area character while reinforcing the need to slow down.
What approach does the review recommend?
- Move deliberately. The reviewer’s practical advice is to observe before committing and avoid treating familiar enemies or spaces as harmless.
- Use the tools available. The review describes turning to a summon and ranged magic against a boss after expecting a difficult fight. Adapting with those options is presented as legitimate play, not a failure to meet a supposed standard.
- Be patient with the adjustment. The reviewer says overcoming the early pressure brought back the base game’s rhythm and pleasure.
The syndicated review’s memorable advice is: “Be slow, be methodical, be patient… upgrade your Mimic Tear ashes.” The available copy attributes the review to The Verge but does not identify its author by name.
What should returning players know before starting?
The review states that defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood, is required to access the expansion. Its account also cautions against assuming that success against difficult base-game bosses guarantees an easy transition: the Realm of Shadow can punish overconfidence in its opening stretch.

In a June 4, 2026 announcement, Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe said Elden Ring Tarnished Edition includes Shadow of the Erdtree and was scheduled for Nintendo Switch 2 on August 28, 2026. The announcement also listed the expansion content for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Because that announced Switch 2 date has passed, check current retailer listings rather than assuming availability or bundle contents.
Before purchasing, confirm that the listing matches your platform and whether it includes the base game, especially when choosing between the standalone digital expansion and a physical edition. Bandai Namco’s announcement also reported 30 million Elden Ring units sold worldwide; that publisher figure refers to the original game, not expansion sales.
