Its open zones create room to build speed and find your own routes, and the mix of traversal and challenges gives the game a fresh identity. The trade-off is a Switch version whose visual compromises and performance concerns can make that world less inviting. “The hedgehog’s best game in years” is a defensible verdict on the design—not an unqualified endorsement of this port.
What is the Nintendo Switch version?
This review covers the original Nintendo Switch release of Sonic Frontiers, not the later Switch 2 Definitive Edition. SEGA announced the game for Switch on November 8, 2022, alongside other platforms, with physical and digital versions. SEGA’s release announcement establishes the platform and release details; it does not establish current stock or price.

Nintendo Life’s Switch review reports more than 20 hours with this version. Its observations about visuals, performance and enjoyable activities—including fishing—are that publication’s review judgments, not controlled measurements.
Why the open-zone design works
The most compelling change is the space between the familiar Sonic set pieces. Rather than funneling the whole adventure through linear stages, Sonic Frontiers gives Sonic large areas to cross, with routes, activities and challenges spread across the landscape. That structure lets movement itself become part of exploration: spotting a distant feature and figuring out how to reach it can be as satisfying as following a marked path.
#1 Best Overall
- Race across five massive overworlcl islands, each with their own unique action-platforming challenges and hidden secrets to uncover
- Blaze a trail as you see fit and discover side quests, solve puzzles, scale enormous structures, go fishing, and encounter a firendly face or two along the way
- Unlock Cyber Space levels featuring signature 3D platforming at Sonic speeds and a variety of challenges to test your skills like never before
- Use the all-new battle system and skill tree upgrades, combining moves such as dodges, parries, counters, combos, and the new Cyloop ability to take down mysterious foes
- Become Sonic and journey to uncover the mysteries of the remains of an ancient civilization plagued by robotic hordes
That freedom also makes the game feel less consistently composed than a stage-based platformer. The zones are not simply continuous racecourses, and exploration involves stopping to engage with the world’s activities. Players looking for constant, finely choreographed high-speed runs may find that rhythm uneven; players who enjoy wandering between bursts of speed have more to work with.
Movement, combat and progression
Traversal is the game’s strongest argument for its format. Sonic’s speed gives the broad spaces purpose, while the mix of routes and obstacles encourages improvisation instead of simply running in a straight line. The result is a more exploratory take on Sonic, even if the openness cannot always match the precision of a well-designed linear stage.

Combat adds another layer to the adventure, giving Sonic enemies and challenges to confront between runs across the terrain. It broadens the play beyond platforming and movement, though the central appeal remains getting around the zones and discovering what they contain. Fishing is another change of pace; Nintendo Life singled it out as one of the enjoyable elements in its Switch review.
How does the Switch port hold up?
The core design survives the move to Switch, but the presentation is a meaningful compromise. Nintendo Life reported substantial visual concessions and performance issues in its review of the Switch version. Those are reviewer observations rather than a quantified performance test, so they should not be read as a measured frame-rate claim. They do, however, qualify any recommendation: the environments and fast movement are central to the experience, and visual clarity and smoothness affect how satisfying they feel.

The available evidence here does not establish a separate handheld-versus-docked performance comparison. It would be misleading to promise that one mode runs or looks better based on the cited review alone. If consistent visual polish and performance are priorities, the Switch port’s reported limitations are a reason to consider which edition and platform you want before buying.
Original Switch or Switch 2 Definitive Edition?
The later Switch 2 release is a separate edition, not an upgrade label for the original Switch game. SEGA says the Switch 2 Definitive Edition includes the three prior major updates and free DLC, and offers graphics-focused and frame-rate-focused modes. SEGA’s Switch 2 edition information describes those additions. Nintendo Life also reported on Digital Foundry’s technical review; that reporting concerns Switch 2, not the original Switch port reviewed here.

For Switch owners, Sonic Frontiers is an appealing choice if the prospect of open-zone movement, exploration and combat outweighs the reported presentation and performance drawbacks. It is a notable change in direction and has enough enjoyable ideas to support the case that Sonic had found a strong new form. But this is a recommendation for the game’s design with a clear qualification about the port—not a claim that the Switch version is the best way to experience it.
