Call of Duty: WWII makes a personal squad story out of the Western Front: most of the campaign follows Private Ronald “Red” Daniels, a young U.S. infantryman, as his unit moves from Normandy toward Germany. That focus gives the story a clear human center, while also setting up a tension between intimate character drama and the enormous historical events around it.
Who do you play as in the campaign?
For most of the story, you play as Private Ronald “Red” Daniels, a Texas farm boy and new recruit in the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division. Activision’s support guide describes Daniels as having a family military legacy and says the player occasionally takes control of other heroes. The result is primarily a squad-level perspective, rather than a single uninterrupted account from one soldier.

That is also how the developers framed the story before release. In an April 26, 2017 announcement, Sledgehammer Games co-founder Glen Schofield described a global cast and a personal story inspired by his father, Ronald “Red” Daniels, and his squad. That statement explains the intended lens; it does not, by itself, establish how effectively the finished campaign realizes it.
Where and when does the story take place?
Activision describes the campaign as centered on 1944–45, with earlier events used to establish its characters. Its route follows the European theater through occupied France, Belgium, the Rhine crossing and Germany. The official description specifically highlights the Normandy landings and the Hürtgen Forest; Activision Support says the story begins in Normandy and culminates in an assault into Germany.

The geographic sweep gives the squad story a recognizable wartime frame, but the campaign is not a comprehensive account of World War II. A contemporary PC Gamer review traces its path through Normandy, the Western Front, Paris, the Rhine and the Battle of the Bulge, while judging the game’s treatment of the war’s scale and losses to be limited. That is one critic’s assessment, not a neutral measure of historical accuracy.
What kind of single-player experience is it?
The campaign’s documented mechanics are familiar first-person-shooter fundamentals: movement, sprinting, standing, crouching and going prone, alongside weapons, equipment, objectives and difficulty settings. Activision’s campaign guide notes that crouching makes the player a smaller target and can help when moving to cover or approaching stealthily. These systems support a mix of direct combat and more cautious movement, though the available descriptions do not establish how much freedom each mission offers.

My reading of the campaign’s premise is that its strongest organizing idea is the squad: Daniels gives the journey a consistent viewpoint, while the occasional shift to another hero can widen it. The trade-off is that a personal cast and a broad military campaign make competing demands. A close view can make individual bonds and danger legible, but it cannot convey the full scale of a multinational war by itself.
The developers explicitly presented the game as an effort to honor those who served. In the same 2017 announcement, Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey said the team wanted “to honor and respect that global sacrifice” and the people who fought for freedom. That intention sits alongside the more critical view in PC Gamer’s review: the game may use a personal story to approach history without fully representing its scale. Taken together, these are useful ways to frame the campaign—an authored squad drama set against real events, rather than a complete historical survey.

Is the campaign separate from multiplayer and Zombies?
Yes. Call of Duty: WWII presents Campaign, Multiplayer and Co-Operative as distinct modes. Steam describes Co-Operative as a separate experience with an original story, so it should not be confused with the single-player campaign’s chapters.
The distinction matters for downloadable content, too. The official campaign page describes the Season Pass packs as adding multiplayer maps, Nazi Zombies chapters and War missions. It does not describe them as extra single-player campaign chapters.

What is Call of Duty: WWII, and when was it released?
Activision identifies the game as a Sledgehammer Games first-person shooter for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Its official page lists November 3, 2017 as the release date; Steam lists November 2, 2017. The one-day difference is best understood as a difference between those listings rather than silently treated as a single universal date.
