Before you start: spoilers, controls, and death risk
This guide gives away story progression and puzzle solutions. Death pressure also depends on your selected mode and difficulty. Protocol Games’ 2020 Steam announcements describe a mode without permadeath and an H.P. Lovecraft difficulty, the hardest setting, unlocked after completing the game on M.R. James or Edgar Allan Poe. Episode 1: exploration and optional Haiku Folders
Episode 1’s optional collectible route is not fully confirmed here. Neoseeker’s Episode 1 search result reports three Haiku Folders associated with the Paper Shadows achievement and the Husher’s Haikus item. Treat that as source-reported route information, not a verified checklist of locations: the page could not be directly accessed, so exact folder placements and a complete collectible route are not established. Open the safe: 4798
The code is 4798. Its digits combine three clues: the house street address supplies 4, Saul’s age in his kitchen-fridge drawing supplies 7, and the last two digits of the year on the oval attic painting, 1798, supply 98.
